Heh, wow. There could be thousands of things it could be. Did it fly? How many legs did it have? Was it long or short? How many body segments? Basically, there is no way to tell what it was from your description (sorry). It could have been a small insect, a baby spider, a piece of dust, or anything else that is small or black. If you see it again, and really want to know what it is, try looking in a field guide.

insects in paper or in books are booklice (scientific name psocids) ... look like moving dust particles.
