Newborn & Baby - June 2007

A friend of mine will be having her first child less than 6 months from now. Being a bookworm, (and so is my friend), I thought that I could get some books she can read to the baby.

I've never really bought books for newborns before, although it's my understanding that reading should be done as early and as often as possible. I realize there are the favorites such as "Goodnight Moon", "Pat the Bunny/Cat/Puppy", etc. I'm just looking for any other suggestions as well. They don't have to be the popular/most well-known ones, as I don't want to duplicate something that someone else might get too.

My daughter loves orange foods. She loves carrots, squash, sweet potatoes ..anything orange. She used to like to eat green veggies, but she hasn't been eating them lately when I try to feed them to her. She does eat lots of other food that are different colors, but a lot of orange stuff. any suggestions?

Fresh diapers always smell good and we even associate that smell as the nice baby smell.

Just curious what is that smell? Is it perfume?

Under American Law, Why is it ok to mutilate the genitals of a male through circumcision but not a female. A man and woman have a son and it's ok to have the prepuce cut of with no objection. Why shouldn't it be both is ok or neither.

I'm not looking for a moral, religous, or health justification. Just a legal one on why one is child abuce and the other is just fine.

my son used to drink 5 oz every 3 hours.
For a month now, he's been fussing after 2-3 oz.. can NEVER finish his bottle without crying.. The doc. said there is no medical reason for it.. we have tried diff. bottles and formula and he does same thing with every single one. its not the nipple... it's not burping... Has anyone else had this problem? i get very upset, b/c i cannot help him.. i can't even figure out whats wrong...

he's 3 month old.. he plays great, always happy and sleeps relatively good.. Only during feeding, is when something's wrong.. He;s on soy formula..

I have a three month old son that I breastfeed and he refuses to take a bottle or a pacifier. My husband wants to go somewhere every weekend all day long. This can get difficult. I am also tired because of the housekeeping, cooking, and I am taking online college courses. I also have three other kids at home, their ages are 11, 9, and 8. My baby does not sleep thru the night. I don't think my husband understands how tired I am. How do I get him to understand that I am tired and this also makes our baby tired and cranking when he is out all day and kept awake so much? Just telling him does not work. He thinks that I am just making excuses because I don't want to do anything but sit at home.

I'm breastfeeding about 36% and supplementing formula the rest. My daughter is 5 and a half months old. I haven't seen any hint of bleeding since 5weeks post partum. My last decrease in the actual amount of breast milk was when my daughter was 8 weeks. I was trying to get the breastfeeding going 100% She was on 1 ounce formula and 3 ounces pumped breastmilk and i had a nursing marathon. I ended up losing an ounce of breastmilk production and my baby lost weight, the doctor told me to give up. Instead of giving up completely after all the hard work, I started just supplementing and quit pumping to up the amount. I just double checked how much she eats last week. I called the gyn to ask about new birth control options. We're using condoms (that look like we're using them fine, they're full). My gyn wants me to take a pregnancy test (which I will do tomorrow morning) Just curious about when people started periods while supplementing. (I saw lots of answers for just formula and just bf)

My husband and I just found out we're pregnant and we want to start stocking up on diapers and wipes early so we don't have to worry about spending money for that when the baby comes. I was just wondering from the time your baby was born to when you got him/her potty trained how many diapers, and the sizes (and for how long at a time) do you think you used. I'm just not sure how many newborn, size 1, size 2... to stock up on. I want to make sure I don't buy too many of one. I know newborns can go through like 12 a day but how long does that last for. Let me know from your own experience. Should I buy a few packs of each size or what and how many diapers to a package would you say?

My son is 4 months old and I put him in the recommended back to sleep position. During the day he likes to sleep on his side. He has been becoming restless at night on his back and has been trying to get on his side I think he is more comfortable in that position. Once he's on his side he sometimes rolls onto his belly. I know there is an increased risk SIDS with belly sleeping. What should I do? Should I prop him on his side using a rolled up blanket or buy a sleep positioner or will he roll right over them? Any suggestions

My son is 7 months old and I just got my period back the day before yesterday. He is exclusively breastfed still, doesn't sleep throught the night (he wakes up once sometimes twice)... I thought periods didn't come back either until the baby slept for several hours straight or started solids!

When did you get your period back, and was your baby breastfeeding/sleeping through/on solids?

Also, I'm wondering if I automatically start ovulating or if I could be having periods without ovulation? I started tracking my temperature this morning, but I'm not really sure on how to do this... If anyone has information on how to track the basal temperature to detect ovulation, or knows where I can find this information, please share. Thank so much!

I was reading a few articles of parents not vaccinating their children because they believe that it's wrong or can do more harm than good. Anyway, it was very intresting but I thought that there was no choice. That you had to get your children vaccinated. And how would they go to school don't you need shot records to enroll them in school. I vaccinate my kids but I was just curious.

i have read somewhere that you can give your baby water instead of formula when he wakes up at night.. his stomach is full, but screams "hungry' b/c of routine feeding... Has this worked for anyone? At what age? For how long?

My baby boy is 7 weeks old and wakes every 2-3 hours for a feeding. I just recently went back to work, I am a single parent and am struggling with sleep. I cant nap with him because there is so much to catch up on when he is sleeping. (Please....no ridicule on being a single parent. You dont know my story)
I hear of some mothers whos infants are sleeping 5-6 hours at a time at night....I would be thrilled to get 5 hours straight sleep. Is there something I can try to help him sleep longer hours at night? I am giving him nightly baths before bedtime and he seems to rest more peacefully this way....but still wakes in 2 hours.
Any suggestions will be great.
Thanks a bundle from an exhausted new mommy. :)

I send him to daycare around 10 am to 3. But he sometimes falls asleep again in the morning after his milk at 8 am and doesnt wake up before 10 am. Any harm in waking him up? He is a light sleeper so putting him in the car seat from the bed will wake him up.
