A friend of mine will be having her first child less than 6 months from now. Being a bookworm, (and so is my friend), I thought that I could get some books she can read to the baby.

I've never really bought books for newborns before, although it's my understanding that reading should be done as early and as often as possible. I realize there are the favorites such as "Goodnight Moon", "Pat the Bunny/Cat/Puppy", etc. I'm just looking for any other suggestions as well. They don't have to be the popular/most well-known ones, as I don't want to duplicate something that someone else might get too.

I Spy baby books are a great choice, babies like the rhymes, when they get a bit older the pictures are a lot of fun, and by the time they're toddlers they enjoy finding the objects in the images.

Anything by Eric Carlson is good.

Corduroy books are usually popular with young children.

Honestly, anything in a board book format will generally be loved by a young child. I'd look for books that you think your friend will enjoy. Especially if she has to read them 12 times a day when the child is a preschooler.

You might also consider a subscription to Baby Bug, it has cute stories and rhymes and it arrives throughout the year, so there's always variety.

Any children's book would do since the baby is only hearing the mothers voice and not comprehending what is heard.

There are 2 types of books you can get...a picture book and/or a chapter book. I would go for the picture book because at such a young age babies love looking at things. Try Caldecott Medal winners. Caldecott winners are awarded for the superb artwork in childrens books. If you want great childrens stories then purchase Newbery Award books.

I believe this years Caldecott winner is Flotsam by David Wiesner.

If these types of books are not what you are looking for then try http://www.beginningwithbooks.org/list.html

look for cardboard, plastic or fabric books with pictures of everyday objects, colors or animals. Some books affer touch sensory, mirrors and sound effects. These books are safe for baby to play with and "eat" while mom or dad reads the stories in regular paper bound books. for actual stories to be read out lous Dr. Seuss is a great way to start

I like Aingeal's answer - go for STURDY! I love the heavy cardboard books they make for little babies. Usu sally just picture books - one picture with a word under it.

I also like the Mozart series of videos & so did my (once baby) nephews. It's more entertaining & stimulating than many others.

Have fun & congrats!
