I'm breastfeeding about 36% and supplementing formula the rest. My daughter is 5 and a half months old. I haven't seen any hint of bleeding since 5weeks post partum. My last decrease in the actual amount of breast milk was when my daughter was 8 weeks. I was trying to get the breastfeeding going 100% She was on 1 ounce formula and 3 ounces pumped breastmilk and i had a nursing marathon. I ended up losing an ounce of breastmilk production and my baby lost weight, the doctor told me to give up. Instead of giving up completely after all the hard work, I started just supplementing and quit pumping to up the amount. I just double checked how much she eats last week. I called the gyn to ask about new birth control options. We're using condoms (that look like we're using them fine, they're full). My gyn wants me to take a pregnancy test (which I will do tomorrow morning) Just curious about when people started periods while supplementing. (I saw lots of answers for just formula and just bf)

The pregnancy test is pretty standard procedure before starting birth control when you haven't been on a medical form for a while. Sounds like you know that the BC can affect your milk supply. You have many options but people, including myself, have had discomfort during intercourse with the Mirena. Had to have mine taken out in Feb. because the pain was so bad. Personal choice though. Mini-pill won't really be an option for you since you're not nursing 100% of the time. Any of the combo pills will probably dry up your supply so keep that in mind.

For every woman it's different but if you're exclusively BF it can take up to 6 months to return on it's own. Some women it's longer and some it's shorter. My second didn't take long at all even though I was exclusively BF for the first few months. My first was a combo feeder and it actually took longer to get my period back - almost 5 months.

Best of luck to you and I'm sure it'll all be fine!

I got my period back when I was down to breastfeeding twice a day, morning and late afternoon, with my 11mth old. It really depends on your body and how it reacts to the additional hormones needed for milk production. I'm really sorry your doctor told you to 'give up' because your baby gets great benefits by even a small amt of breastmilk. Particularly a baby this young, when their own immune system isnt functioning yet (starts around 6mths). I changed pediatricians after getting similar advice given to me with my daughter because she wasnt gaining 'enough'. Still makes me sick to think about it and she's almost 20mths old now. Always really healthy, happy, cute as could be. I had my former Dr tell me that being happy, sleeping well, and calm did NOT indicate I had a healthy baby, that 'good' weight gain was. She was 9.7lbs at birth, and didnt double her weight by 6mths... so what?? She didnt triple it by a yr... she's still hasnt at 19mths! I see your baby actually lost weight, so I understand the concern, but telling you to stop breastfeeding is disheartening.
Sorry, went off on a tangent... Dr's dont know everything so take what they say with a grain of salt I suppose is the point of that ranting. Talk to La Leche League about what is going on, they can help you to continue nursing and supplement at the same time. You have to be careful to do it 'right' so as to keep up your supply.
I don't take the pill as it causes all sorts of problems for me. Condoms arent 100%, neither is the pill, if you really dont want to become pregnant they say to use BOTH. I'm not surprised you havent gotten your period yet when breastfeeding, it's certainly not unusual. I've heard of women not getting theirs back until having completely weaned their kids at the toddler age. You'll find out tomorrow if you're pregnant or not, but I hope you arent worried.

I was breastfeeding and pumping. All of a sudden my milk supply just stopped after 11 months. About 4 months later I started my first period.

I pumped and breastfed with my first after I went back to work. My period returned around 7.5 months postpartum.

I'm so sad that you haven't gotten the breastfeeding support you need. Kudos for continuing to breastfeed, even while receiving questionable advice. It's not too late, if you want to do the work to get your supply back up.

I never supplemented, but I know there are people who do not get their period back until they completely stop breastfeeding. It's not unheard of. Good luck!

I actually just got mine, my son is 7 months old... I think everyone is different, I just asked a question about it and yeah, everyone has started at different times. Maybe your GYN is trying to check off a box and doesn't realize your body isn't reading his/her chart?
