Pregnancy & Parenting - 16 November 2006

I watch TV shows all the time and constantly wonder if non-parents (lack of a better word) think if that's what parenting or pregnancy is really like.

For example:

On ER you see woman have children, work and go about life as if the child had never came into their life.

On One Tree Hill there is a case of teen pregnancy where these kids (mind you only one has a job at a restaurant) live in a lavish home with really great furniture and accessories.

Even on "Everybody Loves Raymond" there are points where you see the kids and it doesn't even seem like the adult characters seem to notice they are there.

While of course these things do happen sometimes (in real life) that people have everything *great* it’s not really a common occurrence.

Do you feel almost all TV series convey parenting as glorious and not necessarily on a realistic level?

How do you think these shows effect soon-to-be parents and/or people considering to become a parent?

Alright...my daughter is almost 6 months old and my husband and I have created a monster...okay maybe not a monster, but ever since she was born we have let her sleep with us whenever she wakes up at like 4am for her midnight feedings, because it takes too long to put her back to sleep. Or sometimes she will wake up right as we are laying down so we just put her in wih us and out she goes...Well now she has gotten smart. Every time we go to put her in her bassinette when she is sleeping she wakes right up and starts crying. It breaks my heart. To all you mothers out there, how did or do you cope with breaking your babys heart for the first few times? I know I need to do something, but is there anything else you can suggest to get her sleeping by herself again? Im not looking for any rude answers, just worried about having to break my daughters heart...thanks

My 15 month old (13 months adjusted) only says "Ma Ma", "Da, Da" and "Ut Oh". It sounds as if she's really trying to say "diaper" and "duck." Is this normal?? Shouldn't she be saying more by now? My daughter is in an early childhood intervention program which has helped tremendously with trying to get her on target and since she's in the program already her pediatrician has recommended speech therapy. Your thoughts??

how do you check your cervix I know its by how soft.. I know the dr can do it but I was wondering if you could tell how far dilated and and how ripe your cervix was.. I'm 38 weeks and I go to the dr on mon.. it will have been 3 weeks since last check up b/c she had her baby..

I haveof been loosing my Muscus Plug for nearly 4 weeks now , a little at t a time , with each week seeming to be more . Never Redish tinged. I was wondeirng if this is normal and would love to hear from others exsperinces who have gone through this.

Okay, i've been with my boyfriend/fiance for almost 3 years, and i feel like I dont give him any time to himself. I wont let him talk to other girls, I get jealous very easily...I am very insecure about myself...I feel like if I let him go somewhere by himself, he'll leave me for someone better...He says he wont, b/c he loves me and no one can match up to me..but its the thought that scares me the most. Hi , I am 40 Wks Preg Right now , I have have feelinga bit odd today , I have been unable to sit down comfortably throughout the dayt ( I have finally given in to sitting on two pillows set a bit apart from one another) , Exsperinceing Abdominal Discomfort , not pain , or contractions , or even braxton hicks , just constant discomfort Like A heavy pressure in my lower regions and rectal regions.

I was wondering if anyone else has exsperinced this ?
I also have had an increased loss of mucus plug , (I have lost a bit every week for the last 3 weeks) , Today seemed a bit larger loss than Before.

What do you think ?

Im 4cm, 80%, 0 station and lost my plug yesterday morning. Ive been having lots of groin pain and soreness....and what feels to be quite a bit of pressure and an occasoinal shape pain in my pelvic/ upper vaginal area. What does this mean? Could my water be trying to break? How much longer do you think?

I love my 2yr old daughter more than her 5yr old brother. She's a very affectionate child while my son is stubborn and downright naughty. Sometimes it gets to a point where I even feel I can hate him. Any advice on how I can change my feelings towards him. I feel like a horrible mother.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me which, in their opinion, is better. I have used both meds before and the Gentian Violet seems to work a lot faster than the Nystatin. My Dr. gave me Nystatin and told me that I could use either, whichever I prefer, so I have both meds and I don't know which to use. Can anyone help me? By the way, my baby is 5 months old, not sure if that matters or not. Thank You.

I have a 4 month old boy . The child has been breastfeed but ive been trying to switch him to a bottle for about 2 months. Up until about 2 months he would take a bottle with no problem then one day just quit. Ive recently went back to work and split up with my childs father so he needs to be fed from the bottle whether it be breastmilk or formula. I've tried every bottle or nipple there is, ive tried laying with him as i would when feeding, ive tried breastmilf, formula, water, cereal bottles and just about everything i can think of. when he is offered the bottle he now almost chews on it instead of sucks and tries to swat it away... help please!!!!!!

Hi! I am 20 years old and just found out I was pregnant. I took two pregnancy tests last night and one this morning all positive. I am experiencing some light but VERY uncomfortable cramps and I am worried. This is my 2nd pregnancy but I dont remember any kind of cramps with my first all though it was a couple of years ago. I have not made an appointment with my Doc yet. From what the due date calculator says I am due in July so I am around 4 weeks pregnant. So I am wondering if anyone has had this problem before so early in pregnancy?

Today my son's teacher confiscated his housekey. Then the bus driver made him get off the bus at home when he was supposed to go to his aunt's house. I was working. My son was stuck outside the house with no key because the driver MADE him get off the bus. He even told my son I was home! My son knew I was at work and that he was supposed to go to his aunt's. Well, his cousin's told his aunt where he was and she came and got him. So everything is fine, but I am irrate. I feel I need to intervene but I don't know what I should do. I already called his teacher. But I feel like I need to do something drastic. What would you do? Do you think I am just overreacting? Because I don't. My son is 9.

How could anyone want to kill a baby? Adoption is always a choice. You can open up any newspaper and find a couple wanting to adopt a baby. Some will even pay for it.

A baby is a living being. You can get an ultrasound done and see they baby move, suck it's thumb, hear it's heartbeat. The baby starts learing stuff from the beginning. they learn to recognise the voices of their family. They are thinking and learning. They are everything, but out in the world.

I understand people get raped and pregnant but adoption is always an option. Don't tell me you don't want to live with the memory, because you will never forget it no matter how many babies you kill.

Don't preach about teen pregnancy bc I know more about teen pregnancy then a lot of people. Your life is what you make it.

My question is what reasonable reason could you have for murder?

Do you think people who have abortions should ever be allowed around children seeing as they have a tendency to muder them?
