how do you check your cervix I know its by how soft.. I know the dr can do it but I was wondering if you could tell how far dilated and and how ripe your cervix was.. I'm 38 weeks and I go to the dr on mon.. it will have been 3 weeks since last check up b/c she had her baby..

Wash VERY thoroughly/wear gloves if possible. A midwife said this is how to do it... (Though I was grossed out by it and afraid of hurting something up there so I didn't do it).
Go into bathroom and prop one leg up on your toilet seat. Insert finger into vaginal opening and go up as far as you can. At the tip of your fingers you should feel something that feels like the tip of your nose if the cervix is closed. If it is open, it should feel like your lips puckered for a kiss. If it feels like puckered lips, insert tip of finger to see how open it is. You can feel weather or not it is open enough for two fingers or not. Compare what you feel to something that you have around (such as a bottle cap or a juice lid, etc.) and measure that item. Also while up there if dilated enough you can feel baby's head just nehind the bag of waters which will feel like a slimy water baloon. Push it aside just a bit and you can feel baby's head though you should not touch it very hard. This is only if you are dialated far enough though and she never told me how much dialation you have to have in order to feel that. I myself would not dream of attempting that one anyhow. Good luck and please PLEASE make sure everything is as sanitary as you can possibly make it. It may also be easier for your partner to do this for you.
