i have a 4 year old son and i also teach pre k. we expect the children to be able to count 30 objects and recognize the numbers when they graduate in may.
the 3 year olds are expected to count 15 objects and recognize the numbers by may.
the 2 year olds are expected to rote count from 1 to 10 and understand one to one correspondence from 1 to 5.
it all depends on parents involvement on how the children do. if a parent doesn't take time to work with a child then they fell behind. be sure to use every minute as a learning opportunity. my son learned the numbers 1 to 9 easily by being allowed to push the buttons on the microwave. think about telephones, computer keys, elevators, etc.

My daughter will be 4 in December and she can count to 15 un-aided...My middle daughter can count to 4 and she is 2, seems she can only do this when I am giving her the three count though...I say 1 she says "2...3.." and then giggles....*wonders if there is a hidden sarcasm* lol
If you want to teach your son, just make it fun. Children learn through play.

Well I am currently working with J/K's and they should be able to count up to 10 when they are about 3 or 4. But there are some kids that are able to count higher, one of them is able to count to about 70. It all depends on the parents and whether or not they offer many opportunities for them to count!

I find that most children can count to 10 by age 3. Some however can start earlier or later. I found what helped my kids learn was numbers and letters that go into the bath that stick to the walls. Its a fun way for them to learn and their attention is captured because of their lack of distractions. You can find them at most Wal-mart stores in the toy department.

My son is 20 months old and can count to 3. Past 3 he just says, two, two, two. Very funny.
He also knows what counting means. If I ask him to count something, he starst counting and touches the stuff (his fingers, toys, etc) one at a time.

2.5 yr olds can usually count at least to 3 , sometimes 10 if you guide them along. And by 3 to 3.5 yrs old they can count to 10 for sure, and some can do ABC's. My son is 3.5 and he can count to 15,knows his colors and shapes, recognize his name in writing, sing the ABC's, wheel's on the bus, twinkle twinkle, itsy bitsy spider all on his own. But then again he is in preschool too. some kids his age arent in a preschool setting and just in daycares. each kid learns different ways. A good way to keep up on learning is to read them books on shapes, colors, and numbers. we have done that since he was born and it just came naturally to him
