Military - July 2007

You join the military, they tell you that you are a fighting machine and don't ask questions. Then some idiot like Bush or a general tells you to go off to Iraq for 15 months and perhaps die. If you survive, you come home to some lousy military pay. If you are hurt, you may not be able to pay your bills. So you are a hero? What a joke!

Is it actually possible for individuals to purchase conventional weapons, tanks and warplanes, and all the other things that constitute a nation's military from the private defense industries or somewhere else?

Not that I want to (anyway, it would be way too expensive, costing in the millions and billions), but I'm just curious to know, seen as though I'm currently learning about the arms trade. .

Shouldn't we still be asking how we ended up in Iraq, and what the agenda is?

According to western media, the Pak army's rank and file solders symphathis with the Taliban. Only the elite who come from an upper class (IN theory there is no class in Islam) want to put on a show to fight the taliban . The elite are stuck. They can only have the loyalty of the rank and file if they pour hate and venom down their throats and at the same time fight the please US to keep the flow of $s and arms. If the rank file who form the majority refuse to fight (they do not seem to have the guts anyway) surly the only alternative is theocrasy.

I just met a new friend on post who is new to this army life like me. We seem o get along great, she seems happy and normal, our kids get along. Her husband seems nice. but in her blog I just read it talks about feeling like when she was in highschool, she stared vomiting "Again" to feel clean. she not only does it to loose weight but becasue she is unhappy. She says her husband is ok with her puking which makes her feel even more like he hates her body (she just had a baby btw) ..is there any army programs out there i can refer her to, or i can call to ask how to help her? I don't know how to approach her since in her blog she is open about it but in person would never mention that. she's like 2 different people, and her husband will deploy in march. So i hate to neglect her as a freind becasue of her issues, but i don't know how i can sit back and ignore it either.

Last week I signed my paperwork for the DEP and after alot of research I feel pretty sure of my decision. I do have several questions:

1) I have a 4 year degree, but due to GPA shortcoming, I can't get in as an officer. Approximately how long will it take me on the enlisted side to get to the officer rank? I will pay my dues and work my way up, but I don't want to be enlisted longer than I have to be. Also, this may sound strange, but I feel as if I would have earned the officer commission by being an enlistee first.

2) MEPS: My recruiter was a bit evasive on this, but I want to go into the NAVY as a Journalist (my degree), but he kept hyping up the Nuclear program and the like. I scored a 68 on my practice AFQT at the recruiting office and I never even studied. HE stated that my ASVAB/ score, which will be taken at MEPS in Tampa will determine my job and not to go in too determined to get one job. Can someone clarify everything post my DEP signing?

Thanks

I am married to an active duty military and have a dependent ID card. Does my daughter (which is step-daughter to my enlisted husband) but considered his dependent receive an ID card too? She is registered on DEERS with him but she is only 2 years old so does she get and ID card at such a young age?

I am currently in college. But I have always wanted to join the Navy. My husband is in the Navy, my family is nowhere near me, and I am so bored with school. I understand my mother's concern for my safety but I have no motivation for school anymore. I also have a brother who's been to iraq twice and is scheduled to leave again soon. So I don't want to add extra stress to her life worrying about me too. What should I do? I don't feel like I am getting anywhere in school. Please help.

I have gotten a little weary of being told that there is no such thing as war profiteering. What do you think about this story? Is it good that a clean-up is being performed? Do you think there should be more, extending to a full investigation of suppliers and contractors?

Or is that, in itself, unpatriotic?

What are your thoughts?

Okay first I am 24 and I have a 4yr old daughter. About a month before I found out I was pregnant with her I decided I was going to join the military. Obviously those plans changed once I knew I was pregnant. I still want to join the army and a lot of my family is in there, but I don't want to be sent away from my daughter because I am basically all she has. Now my question, is there any chance to be apart of the military in any way that does not send me away from her?

A lot of things can happen within two years. That's two more years of America's tax dollars funding the war. Two more years of American military men and women coming home in body bags. Two more years for the Dems and Repubs to debate an exit strategy. Two more years for the Generals to try to convince the President that they need an additional "two" more years to retrain the Iraqi military.
