Law Enforcement & Police - July 2006

This scenario is completely hypothetical but I would be interested in the opinion of current and former police officers on how they would handle the situation.

Assume you respond to a complaint in which a very rare, very expensive parrot was stolen from a residence. The owner of the parrot is somewhat of a recluse and lives alone; his only steady companion for the last 20 years has been his beloved pet parrot. The owner is distraught over losing his pet.

As you invesitgate the crime an unreliable confidential informant tells you that an ex-con living up the street from the victim stole the bird and will be reselling it to a wealthy collector. Circumstantial evidence tells you that the bird is still in the ex-con's house but you have no way of knowing when the exchange to the collector will be made. You are personally convinced this guy is guilty but don't have sufficient grounds for a search warrant.

What do you do?

We recieved an email for a "winning" 2nd place UK online lottery. We would like to report this email to the proper law enforcement agencies in the USA and the UK so they can arrest the people who are doing this fraud. Its just a ploy to get banking details so they can rob people. We need real email or snail mail addys to forward/send this email to for investigation and prosecution. We need to help stop this kind of fraud before some innocent, pc illiterate person falls for the scam and loses all their life savings unknowingly.

i am from canada,I am 19 years old, i just paid for my college education in september.
i had a very clean criminal record, no fights, no nothing. i did something really stupid, i got a new job @ a warehouse and i stole couple of things from them ( about $1000 worth of it) and got caught. now the police is involved and they have given me a appearance date in the court. i feel like killing myself. i did not tell my parents and i am not going too under any circumstances. i want to contact a lawyer and do something about it, but i am just so confused right now that i can not think. i have ruined my life with this. is their any possible way i can be helped i am ready to do anything possible. i was highly misguided that draged me into this. i am short on money since i pay for my college, i do not know what to do. please do not ask me why did i do it or i was to stupid.. if you can please advise me @ this moment. shall i go to a lawyer or just appear in the court @ the given date?
Thank Yo

Think about it. Our police are typically in the police academy for a period less than 6 months. In that time, every topic concerning police procedure is covered..Including the use of deadly force. How much time could an academy spend teaching these people how to employ deadly force. What do they do? Say, Ok Mr. Cop Wannabe..If someone threatens your life, and there is no alternative, shoot to kill? Even if the ENTIRE 6 months were devoted to the use of deadly force, would that be enough for John Q Lawguy to walk the streets with a gun? Doesn't it seem just WRONG that these people have deadly weapons put into their hands, with a minimal amount of training?

i know there are law enforcemen officials out there and i need some civilized advice. here's the deal: with the AC on, the tv at a decent volume and we can hear their tv!!!
the husband works nights and we can always tell he is home (after midnight) 'cause he drops his shoes right by the bedroom door. they just had a child and they make a lot of noise when they get up to feed the baby. we put up with the noise during the day, we understand how hard it is to keep a toddler still, but at midnight????
and get this, this family complains about THEIR upstairs neighbor and have even called the cops.
so, any good suggestions? i do not want to deal directly with them because it could turn into a nightmare. i do not want to get into screeaming matches or calling the cops, yet.
we call the landlord to compain but there is only so much he can do.

The webcam is small, pemanantly placed outside of an upstairs window where it is hard to spot, and there are no warning signs. I am concerned as my 7yo daughter plays in the garden and outside with friends sometimes in a paddling pool where she could be videoed and any images will be easily uploaded to the internet. They have never asked my permission to video my property or family, do I have any legal standing for asking them to remove it or ensure it does not video my children?

I had about 2 beers and as the party was coming to an end me and my gf went upstairs. Then cops came banging down the door and they just walked right in collected everyone put them in the liviing room and all of us who were 18 got underage consumption, disturbing the peace, and contributing the unruliness. we all asked for beathalizers but the officer just said.." we can tell ur intoxicated" and wrote us the citations. This cannot be fair as i was upstairs minding my own business and they couldnt possibly tell if i was drunk or not and i asked for a sobriety test. then to cap things off after 30mins they let me drive home.. bad night... i got a clean record ,excellent grades wat should i plead? and what are the possible outcomes?
