I think it is because the majority of police are white and the majority of the white police are racist themselves, and do not want to upset the white people in the community (who are still in the majority).
On the other hand, and, trying to be fair to the police, 48 hours is not really that long for them to gather evidence, as I think someone else has already piointed out. It could also be that any suggestion of racist attacks, is likely to anger both black and whites and therefore, might, in itself cause tension and lead to riots. It would still be wrong, though, to suppress this information, which I suspect is the case.

Does it matter another mother and father will have the pain of the loss of their son. In a city of a number of races and colours gangs get together. The police say that there was racial remarks made. I have no doubt on both sides but it will not excuse the fact a fight took place and a young man lost his life.

All murder is wrong, regardless of race motivation. At the end of the day catching the culprit is what counts, not what you call it.
Saying that, racially motivated crime, needs stamped out.
The Police are under a lot of pressure. It would be nice to think they were bright, but hey-ho

When police are investigating murders they usually, with some notable exceptions - i.e. the Lawrence case, take great pains to get it right. 48 hours is not an unreasonable period of time to issue a statement about possible motives in any murder case. After all they get a lot of flak when they get it wrong.

I agree with you about the rioting.

Probably because they were not wanting to inflame the situation, The second you add `Racial` to a crime such as that it can cause further problems and both sides will take up offensive / defensive positions and will expect the otherside to act pre-empting further escalation.

I think that this racist angle will be mainly media induced - cos they love things like that - It sells papers !

It's not racial if it's just a gang of whatever race fighting another gang, of whatever race.

It becomes racial if the reason they are fighting is not just that they are young men with little to do and too much drink, but that they are fighting the others BECAUSE of what race they are.

It was not racial. No figures have been given.(so you are guessing). It will not escalate into riots. Callon Estate is rough but is greatly improved due to the police help.

May have been gang related not racial. You have to gather the evidence and not assume as you do!
