I manage the night shift at a commercial laundry. We have four washers that handle 150 lbs at a time and one handles 80 lbs at a time. For dryers, we have four that handle 170 lbs at a time and one that handles 95 lbs at a time.
We have no problem processing 3 tons of linens in an 8 hour shift. We mainly do sheets, towels, table cloths, etc.
We have four workers in production. This is hard work. I've done it as a fill-in. It will break your back and arms.
All four of these workers are Mexicans. All legal. All work for about $8.50 per hour 10pm-6am. We work six nights a week. Some nights all four are on, some nights only three. We do our best to avoid OT.
Business is off a little. We used to see 5,500-6,000 lbs per shift. Now it is more like 5,000-5,400 lbs. The boss says one worker has to go. Work is down by about 10%, but staff needs to be cut 25%. "They'll just have to work harder or we'll get someone who can" is his attitude.
This is my father. We are at odds over this.
