Brian - much as you might argue otherwise the facts are strongly against you. Poverty levels rose under Reagan and Bush Sr, fell under Clinton and then rose under Bush Jr.
Minimum wage increases have generally not been followed by massive job losses despite Republicans always predicting this.
Giving more money to people with the highest propensity to spend and the lowest propensity to import is obviously going to boost consumption.
Nice try - doesn't fly though.

Politicians are liars.
Political fanatics are liars.
Neither party stands for the poor people. No mattewr what they tell you. I don't see a poor democrat being elected to the seat any more than a poor Republican. And, if you've never been poor, if no one in your family has been poor (which is the case in most of these candidates) then how can you identify really?
Now some will say a surgeon doesn't have to identify with the person bleeding out to save their lives. And that's true. But in most cases that doctor will take a much more personal interest (not treat himself because that would be stupid) if its his guts that are on the line.
I've said this a lot in these question forums. But abolishing the parties is the real answer. Find an individual that cares about the fact that we are making people choose between food and gasoline, the fact that the Middle Class is becoming the Poor Class.
That's my two Abrahams on it...

It is very difficult to find a "Party" which represents the "poor", as many if not all the Parties have some level of funding, and hence bias towards those who provide that funding, whether it be a Corporation or a Political lobby such as the Israeli Lobby. I would say only an independent candidate can be considered as representing the poor in their given constituency, because the parties, especially the Big 3 are all singing from the same hymn sheet, and all 3 are on the same "flight path" towards a Fascist European Union, and a World Government. ALL of them. Well done Mr R Swipe (brilliant name, I'm so so annoyed I didn't think of that,..'we should become friends'),....you, at least have a good and firm grasp of the REAL World,...unlike many others I am truly sorry to say.

It is no doubt that it is the Democratic party that is perceived as the "Party of the Poor".
This perception is kept alive by Democrat politicians as they continually promise to take money out of the pockets of the evil rich and put it into the pockets of the "poor".
It's rather ironic that it is the "evil rich" that provide most of the jobs in America and if the Demcrat politicians were allowed to keep their promises their would be an immediate huge increase in the unemployment rate.
So, lets put perceptions aside and deal with reality. Let's ask a better question... Which party's economic policies provide an environment where jobs are created and more people are employed? It is my opinion that the Republican Party is the real friend of the "poor" and middle class.

Supposedly that is the Democratic Party but that has long ago morphed into working for special interest groups and many of those (labor unions, for example) are against the poor. In addition, many older plans have back fired terribly (minimum wages, welfare, medicare, etc) and work at keeping the poor poor. The Republicans generally support business be it large or small and while that generally helps the poor indirectly, the poor are not the primary focus. The Libertarians believe that help for the poor is a private interest and no business of the government.
So, none of the parties work for the poor people but the Republicans come closer then the others.

I could care less about this question, but someone said that the democrats work for the lower and middle class. How is this so? They have been in control of the House and Senate for a full session, yet I continue to pay obscene fuel prices, the home foreclosure rate has reached Great Depression levels, outsourcing is at an all-time high, and criminal immigration is out of control. I have yet to see the president veto a single bill aimed to address any of these issues, primarily because the democrats have not proposed such bills. So I ask again, how are the democrats working for the middle class? What have they done in there first session to help us out?

Do you really believe either major party has anything but their own well-being in mind? I want what is fair for one and all, not just democrats or republicans making promises only for votes. Historically both have done a lot to help the poor, but it seems this only happens during election years. And when you ask who will work for poor people, do you mean who will create more welfare programs? I'd rather see people being taught essential working skills and the ensuing job placement than just handing them food stamps and government checks-wouldn't you?

No political party in any corner of the world ever worked for poor people. Politics is the struggle for power. All ethics and morals are used as smoke screen to capture the power. Politics have no religion and religion have no politics. So dear first off all understand the nature of politics and ask an improved question.

The Democrats claim to be working for the poor. They do this by promising to pay money to poor people if they will vote for Democrats.
The Republicans are actually working to help the poor by supporting business and industry.
I own and operate a small business and the people who work for me are not "poor" They are working class people who earn a paycheck to pay their bills.
How many people are given jobs by the welfare department? None. Every time one of their clients finds a job it is a loss for the Democrats.
