On Torture and American Values
The New York Times | Editorial

Sunday 07 October 2007

Once upon a time, it was the United States that urged all nations to obey the letter and the spirit of international treaties and protect human rights and liberties. American leaders denounced secret prisons where people were held without charges, tortured and killed. And the people in much of the world, if not their governments, respected the United States for its values.

The Bush administration has dishonored that history and squandered that respect. As an article on this newspaper’s front page last week laid out in disturbing detail, President Bush and his aides have not only condoned torture and abuse at secret prisons, but they have conducted a systematic campaign to mislead Congress, the American people and the world about those policies.

You'd think they'd get some replacements. I know its durable, but that seems a little old for a tank.

June of 2006 I purchased a rehab condo in a rehabbed building. When the electric company came to put in the new meters in for all of the units, they forgot to put mine in. It's almost a year and a half later, and the meter corresponding to my unit is still not in there. They have no way to measure the electricity I use, so I still haven't received an electric bill. I've let the electric company (ComEd) know, and originally they told me the developer had to re-set it up, and because no one was claiming responsibility (developer said they already had, and didn't need to do it again), I let it slide . Free electricity, right? Anyway, I've been on ComEd hard recently to get this installed because I have no idea who is paying for my electricity and I don't want to be hit with a huge bill sometime. The customer service told me once it is installed I will be charged a monthly "average" for all the months I didn't have to pay.. I'm nervous this is going to be an unfair arbitrary number.

Media reports of the day listed the COMMUNIST PLA woes of the early 1990's due to COMMUNISM'S historically proven failed economics and a nearly bankrupt central government. Boots for every other soldier, guns for half their men with only 5 BULLETS PER GUN, no real navy and precious little effective air forces. Command was antiquated as were communications, nuclear capacity and field armor with moral was tanked due to nonpayment of salaries throughout the conscripted service of the P.L.A. The student uprising of 1989 by unarmed citizens seeking FREEDOM nearly defeated the PLA but was repelled with an excess of 10000 MURDERED students in the streets of China's capital. Point is, the people nearly won. 1994 saw the realization of the dream of capitalizing from tyranny while undermining freedom and avoiding living wages by a small group of Arkansas traitors when Clinton, acting as a WMT lawyer while President of the USA, extended "favored nation" trading status to the enemy of freedom

An off-duty sheriff's 20 year old deputy went on a shooting rampage at a home early Sunday in northern Wisconsin, killing six people and injuring a seventh before authorities fatally shot him, officials said.

The suspect was 20 years old and worked full-time as a Forest County deputy sheriff and part-time as a Crandon police officer, Sheriff Keith Van Cleve said. He would not release the suspect's name but said he was not working at the time of the shooting. The question everyone is asking is he an Iraqi war veteran?

A short while back, many conservatives attacked the Democratic candidates for not participating in a Fox News debate, saying the candidates were "too scared." I'm wondering if they see the Republican front-runners' non-attendance at the long scheduled debate at Morgan State University the same way?

The further America becomes divided on it's policy to Arab nations will only worsen it's resolve to bring peace to this conflict. We need a leader with enough vision to unite all Americans to work together. The current policy is only fueling the hatred and creating new suicide bombers everyday.I hope Mrs. Clinton has what it takes.do you agree?

The way I look at it, why should so many poor children be without health care considering so many people getting abortions? Maybe we could do a trade-off. You let us stop the genocide (or infanticide) by banning abortion and we will let you give universal health care to children under 16 yrs old? Deal?

I mean, the cost of the war is always the standard anymore. All politicians who oppose the war, yet claim to support the troops are constantly saying we spend too much in Iraq. How is it that complaining about the cost of operations is equal to supporting the troops?

Back in World War Two, many top baseball players served in the military. Among them: Bob Feller, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Hank Greenberg, Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra. Other than Pat Tillman, who has volunteered? If we are in a fight for civilization, as President Bush says, why don't we see more celebrity volunteers? Sean Hannity, are you listening?

Bush, Texas at odds over death case (please read it, everyone needs to know this is happening.)

I know Bush is an @ss, but this goes beyond the pale, to actually fight to allow gang rapists/murderers to go free just to kiss up to Mexico... I cannot even begin to express myself here!

How can we send a message our congress/president will actually HEAR? So far, the whole calling/ faxing/ emailing/ letter writing campaigns haven't done a whole lot of good. What will it take???
