You'd think they'd get some replacements. I know its durable, but that seems a little old for a tank.

Not sure why that is. I have seen trainloads of brand new M1A1 Abrams on railcars in the Tulsa railyard. These were not small shipments, but probably 30 or more tanks each time I noticed a trainload in the rail yard.

So our government is definitely investing in new tanks. Have no fear.

Numbers. The average M1 Abrams tank cost you about 3 million bucks. There are a few thousand in service, which adds up to one giant pile of money. The real reason, though, is that it's such a darn good tank. Very few have ever been lost in combat. No need to replace them...

On the other hand, the average F-15 is around 20 years old...

Some of the M1A1 Abrams tanks are almost brand new when they come off the fix it line. It is like restoring a 55 Chevy. but the tank comes out with new items on it.The govt. likes using the letter M>M-16>M-151A1 jeep. and Uncle likes lots of numbers if it makes since or not it is EASY to remember.

The first M1A1 were issued in 1988 and the original M1 in 1978. The current model is the M1A2 which is still fielding since 2001. It may be old but it is still the best Tank in the world.

Tanks are not like automobiles, they don't need to bring out a snazzy new model every year. The M1 is the most advanced, most durable tank in the world, bar none, so there is no need to replace it at this point in time.

Age is not a factor in many military items. The B-52, for example, is older than any of it's pilots but remains a key mainstay of the USAF for it's mission.

Well, from everyone's answers... I had an answer but I don't know anymore. I am 15, 5'1''-5'2'' and I weigh 98 pounds. I am at a pretty healthy weight actually. Not anorexic or anything. So for a girl, I'd have to say anywhere from 95-110 pounds. Not quite sure anymore. It depends on how muscular you are too, and pretty much everything. Like metabolism, your eating habits, WHAT you actually eat...

Every so many hours of use the tank gets a make over. Tanks will last 25 years at the most.

A M-1A1 tank is a few million bucks per copy. When you consider the fact that the Army and the Marines have thousands of them it would be expensive to buy a replacement one every few years. So tankers PMCS their tanks, and maintain them very well and every so often they probally get refits to save on buying a new one.

Go look up the average age of a B-52..

Military equipment tends to be kept in service for a long time because it's so expensive and time consuming to replace. They do get refit fairly often though.

Because they are not making any new ones, all the old, damaged, worn out, ones are returned to the factory, stripped down to the basic essentials and refitted - upgraded then they return to the military till they get broke again.
Recycling at its best!!!
