"Colorado Springs - As the nation fortifies its Southwest land border to stop illegal immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere, the U.S. Coast Guard is bracing for diverted migrants at sea - and preparing a maritime virtual fence.

The plans call for surveillance drones that can augment radar to spot smugglers of people or drugs on the oceans, combined with patrols by helicopters equipped with mounted machine guns.

Tightening U.S. enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border "needs to extend into the water. That is the goal," said Adm. Thad Allen...."

Since ALL our borders need to be secure, I am glad they are on top of this.

What do you think?

Sobering article that mentions not only the flexibility in the current funding bill regarding how that money is spent but a letter attached to Friday's Congressional Record saying California, Texas etc should have say in what sort of security they want for the border. Letting sanctuary cities decide if they need border fencing is like asking an alchoholic to decide if he's had enough.

One phrase from the article seems to sum it up:

"In this case, it also reflects political calculations by GOP strategists that voters do not mind the details, and that key players -- including the administration, local leaders and the Mexican government -- oppose a fence-only approach, analysts said."

Are they right?

Do we 'not mind the details'?

In the state of Nevada the legalization of Marijuana is actually getting support from a few big organizations.

They just want to make sure minors are monitored like with alcohol you must show ID.

I personally think it should be legal.
If alcohol is legal, why not marijuana? I havent heard any stories of a marijuana death.

It would be legally sold. As long as you dont drive under the influence, adults would be able to have up to an ounce.

Whats your opinion?

The hierarchy of the Republican Party within Congress has known that Rep. Foley is a homosexual, but did not come forth with this information, fearing that it could damage his reputation. One week ago, we learned that Rep. Foley had been sending explicit IMs to former Congressional pages. Now, the Democrats are all over the Republicans for not coming forth with the information that Foley is a homosexual, and furthermore, for not reducing his contact with male pages. Had the leadership within the Republican Party outed Foley as a homosexual, and thusly forced him out of Congress, the Democrats would have been all over them for being "homophobes." Now, they are all over the Republicans because they weren't "homophobic" enough in dealing with the Foley situation when it first came to light. Now that there is this, it is a "cover up." Yet, when there is a scandal within the Democratic Party, and Republicans jump all over it, it is dismissed as a "vast right-wing conspiracy." Why???

Check the Mcallen monitor, Starr county is considering raising the taxes to help pay for illegal aliens who show up in labor. They can't pay the bill, they don't get medicaid, so the hospital eats it. Then the taxpayers do. What are your opinions on this?

In my opinion the tactics (cash bonuses, targeting disenfranchised youth, dangling post-secondary education etc.) that are used to recruit individuals can be very shady. I would rather they have "volunteers" seek them out instead of trying to lure kids. And yes I know that young poor kids do not represent the entire military but they sure are the backbone of it.

Another reason that I feel the service is semi-voluntary is because of stop-loss orders. My brother who was in the army served during the invasion of Iraq in '03, received a stop loss order, and then served an additional 1 year tour. Do you think that service is voluntary after a contract has been fulfilled or is this a backdoor draft?
