In the UK what is the difference? I know lawyers, practice law. But what, in layman's terms are the basic differences? When you would you need one but not the other? Do they deal with different aspects of law?

This was a famous case regarding the British military occupation of portions of (what is today) Maine, during the War of 1812. The complete legal reference is United States v. Rice, 17 U.S. (4 Wheat.) 246 (1819). However, I have been unable to find a link to this case on the internet. The FINDLAW website does not have this case.

Can anyone provide a link to this Supreme Court case from the year of 1819?

The international airport servicing Johannesburg was known as 'Jan Smuts Airport' from its construction in 1952 until 1994. In 1994, it was renamed to 'Johannesburg International Airport' to remove any political connotations. In 2006, it was announced that it would be renamed again, to 'Oliver Tambo International Airport'. Doesn't is seem that the ANC has double standards when they decided to change the name to a anti-apartheid politician??

Along with our real allies, the Irish and French. We would be able to stand up to anyone. Including the USA, who I doubt would take side against the home countries of most of their (white) population.
I doubt the African Americans would fight for the people who enslaved them in the first place if they had a choice.

Texas case is one of two being used to define how far punishments of immigrants can go
By PATTY REINERT

WASHINGTON - Possession of a small amount of cocaine is a misdemeanor under federal law. But in Texas, the crime is a felony — serious enough that it helped send Reymundo Toledo-Flores to prison for two years before he was deported to Mexico.

On Tuesday, the first day of arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court's 2006-07 term, the justices will consider Toledo-Flores' criminal case, along with that of a fellow Mexican national deported after a similar drug conviction in South Dakota. The issue before the court is whether the federal or the state view of the immigrants' crimes should be used to decide their prison sentences and the terms of their deportation proceedings.

To decide, the justices will need to clarify a federal immigration law that once was aimed at ridding the country of foreigners convicted of crimes such as rape and murder but increasingly is being used by immigration authorities to deport those charged with relatively minor offenses, including drug possession and shoplifting.

"The idea was that when immigrants commit really serious crimes, we didn't want them in the country," said Magali Candler, a Houston lawyer who chairs the regional chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. "But over the years, the immigration laws have been amended repeatedly and now they are written so broadly that an immigrant who commits a minor crime, even if they never served a day in jail, can be deported."

Court records show that Toledo-Flores has repeatedly entered the United States illegally. He was deported last spring after serving his two-year sentence for felony illegal re-entry — a prison term that was lengthened because of his previous conviction in Harris County for possessing less than a gram of cocaine.

His lawyers are challenging his enhanced sentence before the Supreme Court, saying that because the drug possession charge would not be a felony under federal law, it should not have been used to increase Toledo-Flores' sentence on the re-entry conviction. If he wins, Toledo-Flores would gain nothing, but his case could help other immigrants charged with similar crimes fight their sentences and deportations.

Was watching Montel yesterday & this was the subject of the show....
Some of the people had 2 felonies, but was busted for something minor like shoplifting & got 25 yrs to life....

Should the 3 strikes law be for ALL crimes commited...even petty crimes...for someone who already has 2 strikes against them...or should there be allowances?
Should someone really go to jail on this law for 25 yrs to life for something like walking through a store & drinking a soda without paying for it first?

My husband is up for a disciplinary at work for an accident which wasn't his fault, a company lorry reversed into his company vehicle.

However, because there were two men in the lorry they are sticking together with their story and saying that they didn't see him, but my husband is being done for being off route, which he was slightly but he was on his way back to the depot and decided to grab a sandwich on his way back, but is this really a cause for a disciplinary meeting because the lorry driver should have looked for other vehicles before reversing shouldn't he?
