I am English, but my Father who was also English was in the Kings own Scottish Borderers for 22 years, and fought at The Battle of Arnhem, he and the rest of the 7th Battalion were more than brave, they are HEROES. He was immensely proud of his regiment and of his men. What a shame that a regiment that has such a long history should die. Anyone serving in the Army in todays world is in my eyes very very brave.

Whilst Scotland has a proud history of soldiers, unfortunately everyone thinks there men are the bravest. This is as commonly claimed a fact as 'our army has the best commraderie'. All soldiers are brave in battle if they are trained well.
PS As a historical note, the French didn't do so well in WWI, nor the Irish or Scotish against the English at various times in their history. Many African American's do not identify with the US being only' white' and therefore stand up for their own way of life as would any 'white' American. As as for the US alliances - they have strong trading partnerships with the majority of the western world -why would they potentially alientate a commercial ally for the point of 'starting a war'?

I'm of Scot's parentage and I'm afraid I must disagree. The best and bravest soldiers currently on the planet are the Ghurkas. They are fierce and feared in combat, unfailing helpful and polite in other situations, and don't get roaring drunk when off duty. I do agree with you about the Scot's being among the bravest soldiers in the world though.
I can't agree with you about the Afro-Americans. A very high percentage of troops in Vietnam were Afro-Americans. If you look at the history of WW2 you will find that the most decorated unit in the US Army were Japanese-Americans who had more immediate reasons for not fighting for America. But they did. Why should Afro-Americans be any different when the chips are down?

No I do not think so. In modern time, the bravest must be the Finns who with a too little support from the Swedes, who could have given the Finns a far better support than they did.
The Finns stand up against the aggression from Soviet Union who could not beat them and the war ended 0 - 0. The war was too costly for the CCCP.
This war gave Hr Adolf Hitler the idea that Soviet should be an easy target, but it wasn't. It is one thing to be fighting in deep forests with people who know the land and feel comfort in it and another thing to be on open fields.

As a Scotsman I should obviously state that the soldiers of scotland are the bravest, but I cannot. This is because the Ghurkas of Nepal are perhaps the bravest soldiers. They work so hard and hae so much riding on their work (family etc) they can always be relied upon to be the bravest. The best is different, but bravst has to be the ghurkas, closely followed of course by the scottish soldiers!!

Scottish soldiers are good no doubt about it. That clown saying Scotland never faired well against the English, look up the Scottish wars of independence - Scotland won them. The English objective to put an English king on the throne twice FAILED!

England have the practice of integrating units into the army who they greatly respected in battle.
First the Scots, who served the British Army as fiercely as they fought the English.
Then the Sikhs, who proved their worth on every battlefield they fought on.
Then the Ghurkas, who became legendary.
I would not like to compare these units against each other, because I am English, and it's not my place.
I do know however that the Fijian Army is particulary feared as UN peacekeepers, and that they along with Samoans and Maoris have a very good reputation in the SAS units of Britain/Australia/New Zealand.
The Canadians have been highly respected when they have fought in the past, and are still the UN peacekeeper of choice.
If you intend to go to war beside the French and Irish however, my prayers go with you, you'll need them.

On a Gallantry level it has to be the Gurkhas who have the largest crop of Gallantry medals (although the rumour has it that the para's are up for a couple of Victoria Crosses for their stint in Afghanistan).
I would however never dispute that the Scottish soldiers are some of the most bravest and tenacious soldiers in the world.

No I don't agree. I would support that argument that the UK has always had amongst the bravest & best soldiers in the world & I know why! Its because of your 'county regiment' system of old. Now that that is going with the mergers into super-regiments, I expect the Brit army to become less of a legend.
