From the Puerto Rican side the objections are:
1. Puerto Rico is a nation and puerto ricans are a nationality apart . They are spanish speaking caribbean-latin americans just like Cubans.
2. Language - Spanish is the main language of all puerto ricans.
3. Culture - Puerto Ricans do not want to lose their culture or have their culture diminished or have a "museum -like culture" like hawaiians have suffered.
4. International representation- Puerto Rico has an olympic national team and has international rep. in many events.
5.The economy would collapse with the addition of a US federal tax and the elimination of the tax exempt corporations who operate under an international tax code.
From the American side:
1.Puerto Rico is a nation, they have their very own culture, language and history apart from the US , they have a strong national identity and belong to the latin american family of nations . This social-cultural reality does not allow them to become part of the 'melting pot' and the american assimilation process.
2. Economy - It would cost more, it is expensive to have PR as a state since poverty is greater than in the poorest state of the US which is Mississippi, also Puerto Rico is overpopulated.
3. Military - Puerto Rico is no longer of any military importance for the US, the US closed the 2 most important military bases in Puerto Rico 2 years ago. (Vieques Base in Vieques and Roosevelt Roads Base in Ceiba).
4.political - PR would instantly have more representation and political power in Congress than 26 states.

More than half the population on The Island, has voted to keep Puerto Rico a Commonwealth of The United States about 3 times already because they know on their own, they could not defend themselves from a threat. They know that they have the best Military in the World watching out for them.
If they became the 51st State, they would have to pay Federal taxes. They know they have a good thing going the way things are right now, so why mess it all up?
As a Puerto Rican, I believe that The Island should remain a Commonwealth of The United States.
For all of you others who are giving jokes and insults as answers (Like it will mess up the Flag), it just shows how small minded some Americans really are!
I can't believe the hate that so many of you are filled with!

i'm for even if suits and contents Puerto Rico, besides the indisputable fact that i think of it is extra suitable they stay this way, they might shop their identity quite of being basically individuals (i'm hoping that did no longer come out incorrect). What I recommend is, Puerto Rico does have it quite is very own lifestyle, customs, and language so it quite is not basically like 'the different state'. Puerto Rico already desperate it needs to stay the way it is and if it makes the folk satisfied, i'm happy with it. And to the different answer above, no person is making the U.S. do all of that for the island. actually, the U.S. has too on account it is U.S. territory which potential they use the land. you employ it, you pay for it a technique or the different.

Why would Puerto Rico want to? The get all of the benefits and none of the headaches.
They certainly don't want to do it while Bush is losing the war on terror and 2/3 of the world hates us. Why should they make themselves targets? Nobody likes a loser.

Don't ask me, ask the Puerto Ricans. The American government has given them numerous times to decide whether to become a state or go out on thier own. I guess all the tax money thye get that they don't have to pay for is just too much to turn down. Not to mention the free military protection.
