It costs £20,000 per prisoner per year, which we the taxpayer pay.
Now for 'minor offences' like theft, or bullying (ABH, GBH), anti-social behaviour and the like why not try other methods.
Possible answers- the stocks in the town square ( a humiliating act in which the offender lies exposed to the wrath of the public in the confines of wooden lock over the head and the hands)
Branding with a hot iron, etc

Showing the power of mass contempt for their breaches of social law, the offenders would realise this powerful deterrent instead of a soft society which can be manipulated according to their childish instincts.
..Maybe not so much 'ducking' and hanging!

Community service is a let off and a joke.
Let's "Get Medieval".

Why are the ones here who disagree with illegal aliens living in America considered Racist? This is a issue that will never be agreed upon, as we each have our own ideals on how it should be done. And if your a white person and you dont agree then Good God we are actomactily a bigot, racist. Is it so wrong to think anyone living in our Country should have to pay taxes? I mean not everyone uses them to cut their lawns or clean their homes, so it wouldnt be a great loss to me. Plus the crime that is in the neibhorhoods they live in. They live two and three families to a house to save money to send back to their country. They come here and make the money and then go back and live like kings I have known some who did that. Most of the men will have wives back there and come here and shack with women here and they are known beaters and cheaters. So are we really Racist to want what is best for our country?

I am american and have a mexican boyfriend who is illegal her he works, pays taxes and is not a criminal also I have a two year old with another man that my boyfriend help support and raise he is just like a father to her and he also takes care of me before i met him I was on welfare and now I don't need all that stuff. We talked to a lawyer and they said that we could marry and they would give him a visa but the send it to us consulate in mexico and he has to pick it up and then he would be barred from entering for 10 years. How many of you think this is a screwed up policy?

Iraqis have every right to resist the liar & brutal US occupation.

If this really is World War III then shouldn't americans unite and realize who the enemy is? The enemy is the islamic facist who will stop at nothing to see death and destruction to infidels (in this care jewish ones). Do you really think palestinians ( a fake race) want their land back? Israel has left all lebaneas land down to the last inch 6 years ago. since then Lebanon has failed to deploy it's army on the international border as they were ordered by the UN.
The relations between the two countries for the past 6 years have been of relative quiet (relative to the mid east...). the hizbollah is constantly attacking a post in the Golan hights that is considered by the UN not as lebanon teratory but syrian or israeli (for now at least). these unprovoked attacks has led to the death of 3 israely soldieres 6 years ago and the kidnapping of their bodies. other then that, the hizbollah attacked some military outposts in israel and shot anti-aircraft fire, aiming deliberatly too low and hitting israeli towns (killing a young man).
all that time israel has retaliated only by air-bombing hizballah outpost in retaliation. this time, it seems israel has lost it's patience and is willing to go on a massive attack in order to push hizbhallah from the border. what would you do?

...held a mass march in the U.S., flown the U.S. flag upside-down underneath the Mexican one, and given our police the finger? Whew, I remember how quick they were in Mexico to start chanting, "Osama, Osama..." at the visiting U.S. team during a soccer match, but how can they come to the U.S. and get away with this stuff?
