Do you actually entertain the thought that the USA will ever let this happen?

India seems to have a greater percentage of english speakers than China. India is much closer to democracy than China. The educated 'class' of India is quite rich and innovative. Poverty and lack of education are very high in both countries. China has more natural resources. India is currently on pace to be the most populated country in the world (passing China). India just forged a new nuclear relationship with the United States which will bring them cheaper energy production technology - quite important for improving the economy... I'd say India is well on its way to being the 'next superpower'.

The AIDS crisis in India will demand too much of their attention and resources for them to become a superpower soon, but they're still making progress. China will be there first. They're largest hurdle is the huge amount of land their resources must support. Their economy is going to have to quadruple or more before they every reach that state. They, at least, realize their largest natural resource is their people, and they exploit it. While it's bad from a human rights front, they will gain much in economic leverage by doing it. Their final hurdle will have to be completely opening their economy to true capitalism and implementing human rights laws.

Possibly.
India has many problems AIDS and Corruption.
But in my opinion, the worst problem is the lack of infrastructure.
All India has to do is develop better infrastructure (which it is already doing slowly) to become a superpower.
