Good for you for asking such questions and wanting to learn. The area of Israel was originally the British mandate of Palestine. IE, Britain owned the land and Palestinians lived on it. Following World War II, the land was given over to Jews so they could have their own homeland after the horrors of the Holocaust. However, the Palestinians living there became refugees in their own homeland. Many were forced to leave then and following the 1967 Six Day War and others since. Many are still hoping to return, nearly 60 years after being forced to leave. A couple of years ago, George Bush said Palestinian refugees could never expect to return to the area of Palestine, however, at the time of the creation of Israel in 1948, Americans, for once, had nothing to do with it.
I would suggest this website for further information:

In terms of Britain giving away a country that isn't theirs, this is an interesting question as that is what Britain has done throughout its historical colonial past. India was divided into 3 countries because of the British, Cyprus is in two parts, Northern Ireland was a mess for decades, many other islands are still owned by Britain eg Virgin Islands and Falklands.

The actions of the past have repercussions to this day: Northern Ireland's fragile peace, India's stand-off with Pakistan, Greece and Turkey over the legitimacies of Cyprus and, of course, the topic the questioner asked, the legacy and the future of the Middle East.

It was the British. Not the Americans although America did vote to ratify it in 1948. As di dthe rest of the world.

Noone got kicked out, what happened was that as soon as the British troops left (not to make a parallel with Iraq but one could) the arabs of the land decide to ignore international law and start fighting with the newly formed government. Due to this the founders of the country literally had to fight their way in.

They actyually didn't give it to israel! They sold it! And yes imagine someone walking into your home. you're sitting with your children having a cup of tea, watching the news and in walks an army, throws you out and sells your house to someone else, you've nowhere to go and get chased everywhere you go! They sold the land after WW2 to give the Jews a chance to have their own country and that would have been OK if they had given them a new country, instead they went and sold them another nation's country! O it wasn't as big as that when they sold it but you know ... Little war here, little war there and they extended pushing Palestinians further and further. Right now it seems the only place Palestinians have to go is the sea! Because they're caged in anywhere else!

When did Palistine actually become a country? So far as I can find they have never been anything but Nomads living in other peoples countries. Isreal's history goes back to the days of Babylon and beyond.

Because of after WWII, I already said this a thousand times. The genocide, etc. that happen in WWII, the Allies felt bad for the Jews and decided to give them a state, somewhere that they won't feel persecuted.

IANW you need to check history.. 1949 to be exact. it like everyone on your block is told to get the heck out so the next block over can move in. and that is the way it was in a nutshell. you would be upset too. but it is my opinion there is enough room for everybody.. the idiots on both sides.. are to darn stubborn..and intolerant . they just want to spend the rest of their lives fighting. i am tired of everyone involved ..arabs jews.. and everybody else..that cant manage an agreement.

Why did the British and Americans give Israel to the Jews?
---------------------------------------------------------------
I think you meant why they gave Palestine to the Jews.
If the Jews did not take Palestine they would have been staying in Europe . Better, the British & Americans said is to push them away to somebody else's land.
