Reptiles - June 2007

I have 1 RES that lives in a pond outside. I bring him inside every night because I have raccoons and coyotes. Right now he sleeps in a small carrier, but he doesn't like this, and frankly, neither do I. I'm wondering what other people do who have this problem. Covering the pond is not an option. I have been thinking about building an enclosure to keep him in at night. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Few weeks ago I bought a Tetra Whisper 10 Power Filter for my baby RES turtle. It was working fine for the first couple weeks but this week the water has become cloudy. The guy at the petstore just said "make sure you rinse the filter out every few days" so I have been. However, the filter is now all dark and heavy at the bottom when I take it out and the water is getting cloudy after I just changed it 2 days ago.
I'm wondering.. do I have to buy replacements? or what do I do to keep the water clean.... idk any tips can help! Where can I find the replacements if I do need them? I didnt see any at the pet store

Are Bearded Dragons nice? I'm about to get my first reptile and I'm thinking a bearded dragon because they are calm and I've been around a lot of them. My boyfriend has one and just the other day I put my hand in the tank and he bit my finger and wouldn't let go! My boyfriend and I hand feed him green grapes all of the time and my boyfriend thinks that he bit me because maybe he thought I was trying to feed him a grape. Could someone just give me their opinions. I don't want to be afraid of them cuz I really like them. Oh and it's a baby beardie so idk if that might have anything to do with it. Please Help. Thanks

Do you think it should be much harder to get large snakes, like boa constrictors? I feel it should be illegal (or at the very least strictly controlled) to keep such dangerous animals. most people that get them don't seem to be able to cope with the huge size they get. proof of this is in florida where there is now a breeding boa constrictor population just from the pets people have released. what do you think about this problem? thanks for your opinions.

hes 6 inches was eating 10-20 small crickets butt thenn one day he ate one and stopped that was two days ago hes been drinking and basking why wont he eat? is he full is 20 crickets too much???? idk

Against my better judgement we are keeping him for awhile. We fed him earth worms today, which he loved, and we have veggies on hand. We also got turtle food from the store.

My question is how do I keep him used to his natural environment and happy? We won't being keeping him for long, a couple of weeks tops. His habitat is a fish tank with dirt in the bottom tall grass to hide in and it seems like adequate space for sleeping and some of the day. If I take him out in the grass outside and let him forage around will he stay used to the environment? I don't want to hinder his natural senses but I don't want to release him just yet. We have ducks and something has been carrying them off. If it can do that to a duck it can surely do it to a turtle.

I have a red eared slider and recently his shoulder has swolen up and he isn't using his arm to swim. The swelling doesn't seem to be getting any larger but over time I have grown very concerned about it. Should I be worried? What could be wrong with him? What should I do about it?

Our pond is an old concrete water trauf, w/ creek rocks up the sides. We have about 50 gold fish in the pond. Do I need to add something to pond for the turtles to rest on? There is nothing in it but water as of now.

Does anyones bearded dragon actually drink from a water bowl? Mine will only drink from it if I drip water into it so it makes ripples in the water. Other than that, I spray him with water and he licks that off his head.
