Sulcata and hermans should not be housed together because of the size difference mainly, sulcatas are very large and could harm a hermans, They both need similar conditions but the sulcata can get to be a metre long and weigh as much as 250lbs, They are also tortoise that need constant heat twelve months of the year while adult hermans need some cooling in the winter to start brumation.

My sister has both types and she was told by the tortoise trust people to keep them separate. Sulacatas need a constant high temperature and cannot be allow to hibernate, while hermans have to hibernate.

I think she was told to keep them separate because of the parasites that are okay for one species can seriously harm the other. Check out the link and see what the experts have to say ;-)

Mixing species with different needs is not a good idea.

Also- PLEASE research Sulcata's before you get one. These guys get BIG when cared for, and many keepers are caught by surprise!

For example- do you have a warm, moderately dry place you can put a 3' long, 100lb+ tortoise that needs a space of about 25'x25' minimum in the wintertime?

You should never house two different species together . Each have different parasites and bacteria that could harm the other .
