The smallest common pet water turtles are the Reeves Turtle (which is getting tougher to find as a pet in the US), and most of the Mud Turtles and Musk Turtles. Few of these will get larger than about 5" as adults, so can be in a 50 gallon or so tank somewhat comfortably.

Probably the best research site is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

Just FYI:
- Red-ear Slider adult size is 9-12"
- Painted Turtles are generally great turtle pets, but hit 6-9"
- Box turtles and Russian Tortoises are land turtles although box turtles tend to only get to about 5"

Turtles tend to take more work and tend to need a more expensive set-up than most people think- and there is absolutely no relationship between the cost of a turtle and how easy it is to care for or how good of a pet it is.

Personally, my vote for the best beginner turtle is the Painted Turtle. Smallish, attractive, forgiving in cares... The more common Red-ear Slider is actually, in my opinion, a poor choice- big, more delicate, and only really cute as a baby.

Turtles are actually pretty high maintenance pets and they live from 25-80 years depending on the breed...this means they are a lifelong committment at best.

Aquatic turtles need a large tank (10 gallons for every inch of turtle), basking area, UVA/UVB lamps, varied diet, and a lot of other attention. Land turtles also need various lighting, diet and housing specifications.

Many people think they just stick them in a terrarium and put some lettuce in there and they'll be fine. Not so much the case.

If you're really dedicated and have the money to provide proper husbandry, I'd go with a Red-earred Slider or Yellow-bellied Cooter for an aquatic turtle. For a land turtle, Russian Tortoises and Ornate Box turtles are relatively small and lower maintenance then other breeds.

Good luck!

Red Eared Sliders are water turtles!! Please do your research first. All turtles/tortoises are difficult to take care of and are expensive to do so! I guess the best/easiest would be a Russian Tortoise. Check into those if you still feel you want one after doing research.

You should get a box turtle. they eat everything, are easy to take care of (eat everything), and many are very social. I have had a box turtle for years now, and I really like to take him outside for romps in the wet grass.

If you don't have a large tank, please consider working to preserve habitat, rather than capturing and imprisoning a turtle.

Why don't you go to a river, swamp, or stream to look and observe turtles in their own habitat?

To answer your question as best I can, you might want to look for sliders or terrapins. You might buy one for ten dollars at a pet store, or you might go search and capture one yourself. But again, please don't hold one unless you have a large enough tank. Ask a herpetologist at a zoo or menagerie, or a wildlife study centre for more information.
