Best: In person from a reliable breeder or seller. It is always better to buy live animals that you can see rather than having them shipped.
Next best: From a reliable on-line store with good recommendations from knowledgeable customers, such as http://www.turtlepimp.com or http://www.empireoftheturtle.com (Visit http://www.turtleforum.com for a discussion of good and bad vendors.)
OK: Good pet shop that seems to know what the heck they are talking about.
Not so hot: On-line form places that are all flash, have several errors in the ads, or have bad records with knowledgable keepers.

A local pet store is a much better place to acquire a pet rather then a Pet Super Store or the Internet. Local pet stores take the time to remember not only your pet but you as an individual. I bought my Red Eared Slider at a local pet store and not only do get I all my supplies there but the the owner keeps in touch with my reptilian vet to answer any questions that I may have. It's a great free service and I don't need a "Membership Card".

I just recently purchased 3 turtles from an online store and one was dead upon arrival, my other one wont open it's eyes and han't moved all day , and my third one is in good shape. i would def. say to go too your local pet store!! (i just go mine 6 days ago and it's so sad when they aren't making it!!). The thing is if you go too your local pet store you can pick out your turtle. That way you know if you're getting a healthy one or not. Then you would save yourself some time and money... not to mention a lot of aggravation and heartache like i'm going through. Good Luck!!

Only buy from reputable pet stores. Contact a Veterinarian as they should know the best ones.
Before purchasing, look for clear eyes, a strong shell and cleanliness of the store. Pet stores should not smell. Ask all the questions that you can think of such as where are the turtles purchased from, have they been inspected, and by whom., eating habits, habitat, etc.The sales staff should know these answers if they have been trained properly.

I agree with answer #9.the best place thatt i woukld say is a breeders expo.Because the people there are more expirienced/knowledgeble about turtles than the pet store because they speacialize in that type of reptile.

It is better to pay the extra for shipping than buy one from a petstore. Petstores buy from mass suppliers that do not make sure the animals are healthy or even feeding before selling them.

A great pet store. Make sure you check out all the stock they have and ask lots of questions first.
