i have given up on the heat mat idea, so the second hand tank we bought has a floresent uv light fitting at the back (which we wont use) and one that has been made by prevoius owners in the top of the wood, made from a household plastic light fitting with a white basking bulb in, all works. i was just wondering if the plastic light fitting would be safe being plastic from melting and as its inside the tank will it be safe from the moisture. i hope you know what im on about!

Well i know a so called "turtle" and its been driving my friend crazy. she wants to know whats wrong with her turtle because its flipping over so many times and shes worried that her poor turtle might die. This turtle turns a lot! She's scared because she has school and she can't care for the turtle, but she doesn't want to return the turtle back because she loves it, like a close friend even though she only had this turtle for 2-3 weeks and its never been doing this before! And it only happens because the turtle likes to squirm in its tank, Some advice.. please?

I live in the south and at work the other day right next to the entrance (a fw inches away) was a snake. t was 3-5 feet depending on who you talked to but one thing was sure, it was orange and had black rings around it. It had a small triangular shaped head. Some people native tothe area said it was a highly contagious coral snake, others said it was posionous because it was so bightly colored (black snakes aren't poisnous they said) anyway by the time maintance got there with a shovel to kill it it had turned and gone back under the pine straw and bushes. What tyoe of snake is this and is it poisonious.

I was looking at my russian tortoise today and noticed that her shell has a crack it in. Does anybody know what could have caused it? She also has a chip in her shell. I don't know if I'm using insufficient lighting or not feeding her properly. If anybody knows anything about this sort of thing, I would really appreciate some advice!

My husband's armadillo lizard doesn't look right....last night when we went to bed it was laying on one of its rocks with its front legs pointed back towards his back legs (like when a human lays on their stomach with their arms down at their sides) and wasn't all that interested when i rubbed his back....this AM he was laying on his side between one of the rocks and the aquarium wall, when I moved the rock and picked him up he scrambled a little but he still doesn't look quite right. We've been feeding him 10-15 crickets every other day (per pet store expert) twice weekly sprinkled with nutritional supplement powder, he has water available to him at all times and we mist his tank twice/day.
Any one have any ideas to help?

I have been wanting a Ball Python for a while now, but I dont want to rush out and get one without knowing what exactly what I'm getting into. I have two dogs, and everyone is telling me the snake will eat them! I know they can get up to 4ft but could it really eat a small dog? Are they able to escape? How often do you feed them? How much should I be ready to pay for one? How fast do they grow? Do they stink? Is there another type of snake that would be better?

Okay so i found my Columbian red-tail boa yesterday that got loose in my honda 2 weeks ago yesterday, and I took him to the vet today to make sure that he was okay and didn't have any respiratory issues. He got a clean bill of health but the doc told me some stuff that i had never heard before about snakes needing UV lighting in addition to heat source. He said that snakes need the UV rays that they would be getting from the sun, and that the only way they can get these necessary light is from having a fixture with UV bulbs. I told him that i had never heard that and I have had snakes for about 17 years. If there is anyone out there with CORRECT information on uv lighting with snakes, please share! Thanks in advance.
