I was looking at my russian tortoise today and noticed that her shell has a crack it in. Does anybody know what could have caused it? She also has a chip in her shell. I don't know if I'm using insufficient lighting or not feeding her properly. If anybody knows anything about this sort of thing, I would really appreciate some advice!

Hairline or very thin cracks that so not move when the tortoises does are not a big problem. Neither are typical little chips and dings. Keep them clean and watch for signs fo infection or shell rot.

These often happen when the tortoise hits things like rocks, falls off thigns, etc., so make sure your pen is safe.

As far as feeding, etc. try the advice at http://www.tortoisetrust.org

Hello..if the crack is deep & to the skin...& you want or can ..take it to a vet ( good reptile vets are hard to find ) ....or try the reptile site/ store we use..have heard of people using some kinds of cements, but not sure if it was successful..and this reptile site, will have all the Know about caring / feeding of this turtle ..all reptiles ( except snakes ) NEED UV, plant grow light or they will become seriously ill & die !!Take Care :)
