I also have a garden in the far back yard, so I`m hopeing this is just a garden snake. Will it hurt the kids if bitten. Please help.. If I remember right it was green and black or yellow and black..

Probably a garter snake, but for future refrence, either buy a field guide (if you've got a snake in your yard now, you'll have more, don't worry.) so you can have instant identification, or find a page for your state like the following....

Yes, it will not feel good on the kids or the snake if they (the kids) get bitten, BUT, being a parent, what you do is you tell the kids, (after you've identified it as a nonvenomous species) that you found a snake in the yard, and if they see it, they can -look- at it, but don't mess with it. Depending on how old the kids are, they most likely will never see it... Snakes (in north america at least) WILL NOT BITE unless cornered, threatened, hurt, or otherwise put in a position that their only choice is to bite. (they can't say "Let me go." or "Ow, that hurt." so it's their only choice.)

Find out what it is, learn what you can about it, and enjoy... they're a wonderful thing to have around.

It sounds like some kind of tree snake. Was it striped? If it was striped then it's probably some type of garter or garden snake. They are all harmless. It may still hurt, if you're bitten, but they're not venomous. Just give the snake its space and it will do the same for you.
Yes, it probably did eat the baby birds.
If your state's Conservation Department has a website, they may have pictures of native snakes to help you identify them.

Sounds like some sort of rat snake. Their color and patterns vary depending on where you live. They are notorious climbers and readily raid nests. It doesn't sound like a venomous snake but even if not, it has the potential to "hurt" a person depending on its size. I remember being bitten as a kid by many snakes id used to catch. No big deal just a little scrape. Just let your kids know to stay a safe distance until you can identify it as non venomous. Get a pic next time and post it on here to get a positive ID.

Hello...sounds like a great backyard, especially for snakes LOL..where you have snakes, food sources & good hiding places your gonna have snakes...as for venomous, doubtful..you might check on the net or library or for a reptile store in your area & find out what kind of snakes are in your area, if any are venomous..most venomous have triangular heads, very V shaped, not all but most too & most snakes fear you more then you fear them & will slither away, unless someone corners them, tries to catch them...etc...cats & dogs are pretty good deterents to SMALL snakes ONLY !!! Take Care :)

Where I live Garter Snakes are EVERYWHERE! I don't think it sounds like a Garter Snake even though the coloring you describe is similiar it could be a Ribbon Snake, check this site, it should help you out.

sound's like a harmless snake ofcourse it will hurt if it bites you, but not lethal. one way to tell venomous snakes from non is look at their head is box shaped blunt nosed and blunt tail then they are venomous if the head and tail are sharp then they are virtually harmless
