I have to agree with the others who have posted about the cost of raising baby Beardies. It is NOT a money-making venture to say the least. Between proper food and care for the adults, not to mention enclosures for the babies, UV lighting and heat for the babies, and the many THOUSANDS of crickets it takes to feed them until they are old enough to sell, you aren't making any profit. And then considering that there are so many people breeding Beardies, that you may not even be able to sell them all, so you'll have to continue to feed them more and bigger food, and get bigger enclosures as they grow....it's not a venture to be taken on by just anyone.

Sara (mezcladoreptilia) would know....she had to borrow money from other breeders just to pay her bills, and still owes another breeder money for a thermostat she doesn't appear to be able to pay for....

I dont think a single clutch will cost you quite 25 grand but I certainly get her point. it will cost you around $200 for your first clutch. it is really not a good idea to breed as it takes a tole on the female and if you look around do some googling you will find hundreds if not thousands of breeders who have special stock (beardie with special coloring) that are having difficulty selling the young. most pet stores allready have an ample supply of breeders to go to. another little fact you may not be aware of is the female can store sperm up to 2 years so breeding is not necessarilly a need the second third fourth clutch etc. get my drift you may not be able to stop at one clutch. also you will not be able to house them together so you will have to plan on another tank/cage. if the female is not taken care of properly during and after laying of the eggs she can become stressed and die. it is not glamorous in any way. be sure you do major research before you dive into this. if you figure the average pet store must make between 300 and 400% profit on each animal they sell your babies will be worth about $15 each to the pet store. your first three clutches will be at a loss then after that you will make about $5 a piece.

You know that they can only be together, male and female, for a short time because beardies can be mean to each other. Your best option is to find a reputable breeder, ask lots of questions, and then consider what you would do with any offspring. Can you care for them or find good homes for them?
