Well I had a red eared slider once, and it hissed at my dog. But I'm not sure about the painted turtle.

Being aquatic, they'll get a little aggresive and hiss or snap a little when out of water, but neither will go as far as to bite and wound or anything.. So if you're thinking of buying one based on aggresiveness it really doesn't make much difference.
If you handle ur turtle right it won't happen anyway.

both. dont get one, in case you havent looked at the painted or red eared questions on here, if you get one you will turn into a retard and not be able to take care of them
