Hello..your teacher is right, they aren't poisionous but any meat eaters can carry diseases especially aquatics ( SO ) wash your hands well after handling & NEVER catch wild or native critters in your area, they often do carry diseases they are immune to, but you, nor your family or other pets are not !!! Take Care :) Hey Ryan..not kool for you to say that as Top Contributor/Kudo's BTW, tho I totally understand as well ...People NEED to do their homework BEFORE getting or buying pets/reptiles..:)

What do you mean by poisonous?
They do not have a poisonous or venomous bite, but their meat can be tainted. Box turtles were considered poisonous to eat by Native Americans because their flesh picked up the toxins in the mushrooms they ate- which did not hurt the turtle at all.
Most turtles are safe to eat... just gotta make sure they are eating good food first!

Turtles can carry salmonella. This is why you should wash your hands thoroughly after you handle one.
