Hi! I know nobody who knows much of anything about beta fish, so I've resulted to asking you people online....

I've had my beta fish for about a year now... and recently he has been acting really strange. I've been looking up a bunch of the diseases, and I can't quite decide on what I think is wrong with him. Two weeks ago I went on vacation for a week and had to leave him alone in my dorm.... I didn't want to go a week without feeding him, so I went to the store and bought "7 Day Betta Blocks"... which are supposed to last him 7 days worth of food. When I plopped the pellet into the tank, it started fizzing like crazy.... I was kind of worried at first, but soon left to go on vacation. When I got back, my fish was acting really strange. There was this weird white-like substancy material floating along the bottom of the tank on top of his rocks. At first I thought that maybe the food had caused that to happen. And then later I noticed my fish acting very lethargic and wasn't eating at

I read they don't need oxygen to survive. It has stones & a nice plant. It also has some stone like thing that it can swim thru.

How often do I clean the container? I always feel sorry for those poor things that you see in the stores that are in those tiny square things. This little guy seems happy. BUT I read about them kept in larger aquariums with the filter system & all. I don't want to get into all that. But I want the little guy to be happy & healthy too......ANY SUGGESTIONS?
I also read that it is not good for them to be in the vases with the Peace Lily plant in it.

I just discovered that I adopted snails with my plant and a young lady suggested that black are bad and gold are good. She said that the gold ones are the mysterious snails, but I thought the mysterious snails were dark in color. I would like a few more opinions or facts about this statement. It turns out that the snails I adopted are black. should I get rid of them and if so would it be okay to take them to a lake?

I am trying to avoid having my brother in law come over once a day to feed my fish while on vacation. But what are my options? I have read that you can let your fish go for a few days without food, but I really don't feel comfortable with that. Also read about the vacation feeders, do they work? Will they mess up my levels in the aquarium? I have a well established & planted 10 gallon aquarium with 5 guppies, 2 Otocinclus cats, and 1 balloon molly. I can't afford to buy one of the timed feeders. We only take like 1 vacation a year so it would not be that great of an investment. Any suggestions?

i have a relatively small tank, rocks in bottom, with a middle divider to keep 2 male bettas. there's a removeable blue divider that leaves a clear divider for the bettas to see each other and promote flaring. So beautiful!!! there's no filter.. how do they keep breathing like that?!? dont they need really fresh water to get the oxygen?.... basically how often do i change unfiltered water in a betta tank big enough for 2 bettas?? thank u so much for your help... i'd hate to break my little girls heart by not changing it often enough, yet praying it's not daily!!!

I can't seem to get the salinity specific gravity up to 1.024. i add more salt and it goes up for a bit but then settles back down to 1.021 to 1.020. I feel like i've already added quite a bit more than the 1/2 cup per gallon as recommended on the instant ocean package that i used. I have a 37 gallon viaaqua tank. a fluval 204 canister filter. 12 pounds of live rock, 40 pounds of live sand and 30 pounds of regular sand (aragonite). 5 scarlet hermits and 5 nassarius snails. i'me using a red sea hydrometer (swing arm). my other water parameters seem to be okay. ph about 8.2. temp about 82 F. nitrates and nitrites okay.

I have three black phantom tetras in a 10 gallon tank, but everytime I approach the tank they all hide in a corner behind a ceramic ornament. I've had one of the tetras for three years and the others for 1-2. They will come out if I feed them, but they eat better if I walk away from the tank and watch them at a distance. Is there anyway I can gradually make the less timid?

I am very dedicated and experienced in the fishkeeping hobby and even have my own fish forum. If I kept up with water changes and params could I keep just one pair in a 10 gal tank alone? I've really wanted them and I am able to take care of them.

I think that my fancy goldfish had finrot. So I was told to give him melafix. He has been taking that for a week so today should be his last treatment. He seemed to look much better for a few days, but now it seems like his fins are getting a little white again. Is this normal? Or is he getting it again? I haven't changed any of the water this week because of the medicine, but I plan on doing it tomorrow. Why does this keep happening and how can I prevent it?
