My Goldfish are getting too big for my 10 gallon tank, I was just wondering if anyone knew if petco or petsmart would take them even though i've had them for over a year

I am glad you are getting the poor things out of that tank. I love letting them get big in a bigger tank. But many pet stores will take them back and resell them. Local non-chain stores do for sure, and they are likely to give them a better home. Good luck!

You could try, but they probably wouldn't be two thrilled. Could you add a detail with an approximation of the length of each one? That would really help. Sorry to say, but you should have done further research, so you would know how big your goldfish were expected to get. It is your mistake that you don't have proper housing, but if you had done some research you could have made a decision to try another fish or get a bigger aquarium. It's not Petco's or Petsmart's responsibility to take back the fish you bought a year ago. If you have noticed the size of their tanks they keep goldfish, they are about 10 gallons (at least where I live). If they put those goldfish back in their goldfish tank, it would be them plus the previous ones for sale.

If I were you, I wouldn't even ask them. It's not their fault, and if you think about their situation, it's even worse then yours.

Try looking around as best you can for someone you can give your goldfish too that has proper housing. Many people have outdoor ponds with goldfish. Someone may be glad to take your fish. If you cannot find another suitable home, talk to the people at Petco and Petsmart. If they cannot take the fish, they are probably going to tell you to upgrade your aquarium.

Hi Shaebee, if you have the room &/or finances why not simply get them a larger tank-the bigger the better. You will find they are much more fun to watch with more space to move around. If this is not possible I recommend you put them up for adoption on your local Freecycle group & wait until you have several replies, then you can pick who is offering the best new home.

They won't take them for store credit, it is against their company policy. They will allow you to put it up for adoption though. Try giving them to a friend with a pond. Common Goldfish can get up to 2 feet long and require huge tanks with huge filtration.

Don't take them to petco or petsmart they won't give you anything, give it to a local fish store and they might give you store credit, next time please don't keep goldfish in a 10g that is way to small and who knows what kind of damage you did to those poor things already.

If they don't you could probably trade them in to a small local business for store credit

No, they usually don't.

Some fish shops will, but you won't get paid for them.

Why not just get them a bigger tank?
