I have 6 tiger barbs and 3 red swordtail fish along with 3 zebra danios. I woke up this morning and my only male red swordtail was dead, could this have been from the tiger barbs? I noticed they have been picking on my algea fish as well.

We recently brought a fish, and after a week we noticed white spots on his tail. We gave him some white spot treatment and did a 25% water change, and after a few days there was still no improvment. As he is now lying on the bottom of the tank all the time we visited local pet store who advised us to use Melafix instead. He implied that Melafix will fix all the problems - but I fear this is too late for our fish. Does melafix help with whitespot? Can we use the white spot treatment and melafix together? Just looked at him now and he appears to have a bit of fin rot on his tail too. =(
Help!

I got a fish tank set up for my daughter's birthday and need to know what the best fish would be to get for this. maybe something a little hardy and a grouping that would interest a kid. She loves male bettas but I am not sure what can be with them. I know how to take care of the tank I use to have quite a few I just can't remember what goes together well. thanks in advance

I have zebra danios, both long finned and regular, as well as leopard danios - long finned. The zebras are fine, but the leopard danios gradually get skinnier, one at a time, quit eating and die a slow death. First it happened to a new one from the pet store - I assumed I just got a sick fish. Then it happened 3 months later to another, and now 6 months later I see signs with the rest.

Sorry, I am new to this forum. Leopard danios are less than 1 year old from the pet store. 25-50% of the water weekly. I feed them a combo of frozen brine, daphinia and flakes. I don't think it is the water quality since my neons are thriving.
Though I had 2 guppies die on me yesterday and male guppies grow up in the tank then disappear when full grown? I have the following in the tank: Neons, guppies, zebra danios, leopard danios, Mollies. I have 3 fish tanks, a 46 g - bully tank, 20 g breeding Angels, and 55 g community tank. The 55 is where I have the fish above. Should be plenty of room!

Okay,
I know I have asked a similar question before, but anyways I have a tank that has 55 gallon filtration. It currently has 9 female bettas in it. I wanted to have a total of 13 females in there, could I still add some more fish with the 13 bettas? If so what and how many?
Thanks in Advance!
Also, would it be better to do an only betta tank with 16 female bettas or to have some other fish with them?

Many of them have links to an outside forum. I'd bet that is a violation of Yahoo Terms of Service. Why go somewhere else? Would someone in Target say "oh, you can get that at Wal-Mart and it is better than here..." Heck no! That would get you fired! Now I know the people here are not compensated for their posts with money, but there are some vicious "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" going on here. Some people win "best answer" by unusual margins six votes seem to be the most common. Oddly there's about six people promoting the outside forum. Is there some sort of voting cartel going on here? Do you vote for only your buddies and against everyone else?
There's certainly some good advice here, some moderately useful advice or vague advice and plenty of noise nonsense.
My question is what's going on here?

Have just bought some tropical fish...have a small glass tank and they gave me 4 small fish to start. A few questions:
1. I have seen things that say need a pump as well as a filter but the women didnt mention it when i bought them.
2. The filter is only a small one for beginners but it does send a jet of water out and takes the fish on a little ride when they swim into it....is that ok for the fish?
3. How hot should my tank be....many sites say different things.
Hope you can help. xxxx

Rather than spending lots of money on bogwood and rocks, is it ok to use the ones that you find on the beach?

I would make sure the wood is not rotten and falling apart and would give them all a good clean and soak in water for a few days.

Thanx for answering :)

Ok fellow fish people =) I have a 29 gallon aquarium that I enjoy alot.
So a friend bought me a 10 gallon aquarium for my home office, however,I am lost as to what type of freshwater tropical might realistically be happy in a 10 gallon, and how many?
I set up the aquarium Wednesday, and the filter and heater have been running since then.I believe it would be ok this weekend to get a fish or 2.
So any suggestions on what type of fish would be happy in a 10 gallon?and how many of said fish?

[panics] mk, i just got home n my mother proudly presented me with my fish tank, that she'd just cleaned thouroughly...completely. there wasnt a speck of dirt anywhere. all the gravels been thouroughly cleaned, the plants have been cleaned, the tank has been cleaned, and it has completely new water. 100% of it. aside from that, she decided the filter was getting smelly and cleaned it with eucalyptus oil. thankfully she hasnt re-installed it in my tank, and shes left my fish outta the tank so far cause she thought i might wanna reintroduce them to the tank. im freaking out though...last time i did a thourough clean like that 1 of my fishes died...i dont want the others to die! is it bad to introduce them into such a shockingly clean tank with no bacteria etc? and will the filter kill them? (even though i rinsed and scrubbed at it to try and get rid of euc. oil traces)...what should i do? my poor fish are sitting in a container waiting for their new home, but will it kill them?

His name is Dumbledore-Donut and he is our favourite fish ever. He lives with 3 African Cichlids two Plecos and an albino cory in a 30 gal tank. Don't worry, I am switching him to a larger tank when he comes of age/size. We have never had a fish that more closely resembles a shark than this. We really want to make sure we do the right thing because, more than a dog or a cat, we care about this him.

A chocolate chip starfish I've had for about 6 months suddenly isn't eating much/at all.

I usually give him krill squid or homemade frozen food but lately every time I put it under him he lets it go, and the other fish start eating it. I did add a blue linka starfish about a day before the chocolate chip stopped eating, but after crawling all over each other a bit, they pretty much ignore each other. (no dont warn me about the evils of ccs this one eats as much algae as meat, and ignores the snails, crabs, other slow moving inverts and the corals, theres an oddball in every species.

Anybody have any ideas why, or what can be done?

I just got a new tank, and its salt water. It has nothing alive in it but 2 pieces of live rock. Its set up on a sump filter and has not been cycled. I got a new test kit and everything looked fine so it was recomended to me that i get a fish to begin the cycling process. I got a blue damsel. He later died and i realized that i had read my tank results wrong. Th pH was around 8.2, the salt water ammonia was a 0, nitrates where around 10 and the nitrtates wher at 1.0 ppm. I know that is high, how can i get them down and why is it that hight?

I have a 350L tank (5ft long) I have 4 zebra fish, & 7 fantails. I realise that bettas are very territorial, and will fight other fish, but its such a large tank would it be ok? Will he make his own territory in the corner of the tank and leave the others alone?

Btw don't bother answering if ur going to rude about it.

i just bought one yesterday, and he is soooo mellow!! he didn't jump or anything when they went to pick him up out of his cage at the pet store, and whenever i hold him he just sits there. i don't think he's sick or anything, coz like he moves and stuff in his cage. oh, and whenever i go to pet him, he shuts his eyes and tucks his head in towards his body. does this mean he likes it, or is he trying to tell me "hey! leave me alone!" i named him cuddles coz like i said, he just sits in my hand, but also because today i was holding him and he sorta snuggled right in between my belly and my hand and he stretched out a bit like he was cuddling. :-)

another question. i also found a lil toad at work yesterday. he's significantly smaller than the other, but they seem to be getting along. but the little toad is wild. do you think he will survive being in a cage? even if i have a "friend" for him?

I have a bio-cube established about 2 weeks ago. When I bought the tank, I also got live rock established saltwater, and live sand. One week ago I had the water tested at the pet store, they told me I could add the following items: one cleaner shrimp, two blue crabs, two hermit crabs, and 4 snails. I tested the water again last night with the test kit from the pet store, all of the water tested good, do I have anything to worry about?

How do I plant aquatic plant bulbs?

Hi, I went to petco and purchased a package of 6 aquatic plant bulbs, a medley of Aponogeton, Water Lily, and Onion plant. I was wondering how to plant these, I bought them 12 days ago, without any sign of growth. The onion plant keeps floating up, and the fish keep on nibbling on the onion skin like layer, its quite damaged, will it still grow? Yesterday, I moved all of them into a jar, I put some aquarium gravel from my tank into the jar, and water from my fish tank, I put them by the window to get light. I also change the water every 12 hours with new fishtank water. It smells foul, like sweaty feet... are the plants dying?
