Fish - February 2007

I work at a petstore, and manage it 4 out of the 7 days we are open. Waaay to often I have people coming in and asking, do you sell fish bowls? Of course I say "no", there are no fish can thrive in a bowl, and only a couple that can survive in it. The smallest tanks we sell are a 2 1/2 gallon, this is usually for breeding grounds and what not. I was amazed to find online that some countries have banned the use of bowls, tanks, and aquariums that are under 10 gallons, and I say kudos. How would humans like it if we shoved a ton of us in a small, over crowded room that is freezing, with no simulated light, and we get fed, but we don't get our mess cleaned up? Instead we all get thrown out, put into a new room with new conditions, that some of us may not survive. Does any one agree with me?

I use ammonia chips as part of my aquarium filter, the packaging describes how to recharge the chips so they may be used again but it does not say how often this should be done. I have no idea how long before the chips in the filter need replacing, any ideas? Thanks

I'd like to get some fish, but i've been reasearching and it says NEVER to just put fish in a goldfish bowl, without a filter and all the other stuff. Is that really so bad? I went to a pet store and found out that with a proper fish tank the recommended size for two or three fish, and all the things needed for it, and the fish of course, i would spend over 50 dollars... I would rather just get a bowl and maybe one or two fish to put in it, but of course i dont want to kill them accidentally by doing so...What should i do?
Also, what type of fish are the most resilient, and best to start off with?

I had bought a syphoning gravel cleaner and it told me to shake it half way under water until it started to syphon. It didnt work so I had sucked it then it started to move but by time it got to the end of the line into the bucket it was so slow that I could go make lunch, eat it, and come back to it before it did anything. So I was wondering if anyone could help because I am so doing it wrong.

I recently got a new goldfish. He is in a one gallon fish bowl with graveland a live aquatic plant. The warer is room tempertature although it feels cold to the touch. He wont eat, whenever food goes in his mouth he spits s it back out, and i have tried mant different brands of food. Also, all he does is swim at the top of the tank awhere his mouth will stick out a little bit and open and close his mouth repeatedly. Is there anyrhthing wrong with that behavior? And why does he only swim at the top of the bowl and open and close his mouth.PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks!!

I have a very random 50 gallon tank. Currently in my tank are:

1 - 7" Rainbow Shark
1 - 3" Knight Goby
1 - 1" Female Swordail (her mates were eaten
1 - 3" Angelfish
3 - 2" Clown Loaches
2 - 4" Pearl Gouramis
6 - 1" Serpae Tetras

I have a lot of bottom dwelling fish. I know that the Knight Goby is a brackish fish, but he has thrived in my tank for well over 2 years now. I refuse to put any barb in my tank, for I have never had barbs that aren't mean. I love Rams, but I worry about them in the same tank as my angel, who is quite peaceful. I'm looking for some more color as well as some movement. Most of my fish are very dorment. Neons seem to last a little while, but the shark eventually gets to them. In the past I've had Diamond Tetras, Rainbow Danios, and Dalmation Mollies. One other option I've had before is Dwarf Gouramis but they seem to be kind of a dorment fish as well. I'm looking for something different, any suggestions? Thank you for your help. (Sorry for the long post)

I have one zebra danio out of six danios in my tank that is super skinny. He almost doesn't look like he has a stomach.

I read something that says it could be tuberculosis?? Or an internal stomach parasite? I also heard they can live for years like this.

What's going on? He's swimming sideways some of the times and won't open his mouth to eat.

What do I need to do?

I have an Eclipse 12 system and was wondering if there are bulbs that will fit the hood with higher watts. Its a freshwater tank with a few Amazon swords in it. I want to get more plants but I don't think the 13 w bulb that comes with it is enough for any plants. Is there any cheap and easy way to do this?

As I posted before, I believe my betta has a tumor. It hasn't grown any larger but i have noticed that when stay still he will fall onto the side that the growth is on. When he is resting he will lay sideways on a plant or his cave, basicly anything he can find. I am just wondering if there is anything I can do to make him more comfortable or if there is medicine to give him. I have had him for a little over a year and would hate to lose him in such a way.
Thank you in advance!
Also is there a chance he could just have a blockage in his stomach? When I feed him peas he chewed them then spit them out. I have no idea what to do!

I am in serious need of help to save my dearest goldfishes.

Recenlty they have bloody rotten fins, red veins on all fins, molds on mouth and body, and one of them always sits at the bottom.

The pet store told me to add MelaFix (for damaged fins, ulcers, and open wounds), but it has been a week and a half and my fishes are only getting worse.

I have a 10 gallons tank with 3 small goldfishes (used to have 4 but that one died with dropsy). I know this is a bit crowded for them but I am in the process to getting a bigger tank.

I have done my best to find the tester kits. The pH level is currently 7.4. The Ammonia level is 6.0. I did a 50% water change (conditioned water) and added fresh water aquarium salt which I was told that it would help to fight diseases. Is this normal?

Am I doing anything wrong? How can I save my fishes? I just couldn't help seeing them severing like this. I'd do anything I could to save them.

In the future I am just wondering if there is a
