I was just wondering for all you fish experts out there ;) I'm buying a new tank this weekend, either a 20 gall, 29 gall or 30 gallon. What kind of filter, heater, etc, would be the best for a spending limit, hopefully nothing over 60 bucks? Im on a short budget string as for now. Please dont give me any wait till you get more money, it will come later, but as for now, thanks to those who answer my questions.

PS: I'm getting Kuhli Loaches, so undergravel filters are useless for me( im getting sand).

I recently became involved in a certain situation involving beer and fish. I am not sure if the fish were salt water or fresh water fish but they were in a tank that appeared to be about 40 gallons. Around 1/3 of a Natural Ice beer was poured into the tank. There were around 12 fish in the tank. My question is, Could this kill the fish?

...before filling their fish tanks or doing a water change?

If you suggest it for temperature reasons, keep in mind that the water added to the tank is supposed to be within 4 degrees of the temperature of the tank. If you have tropical fish, this simply will not work, unless room temperature at your house is around 78 degrees.

If you're doing it to dechlorinate, keep in mind that most treatment plants are now using chloramines instead of chlorine to treat the water. Chloramines take well over two weeks to dissipate completely.

The only reason I could see leaving the water out is to stabilize the pH (if you're in an area that uses hydrogen peroxide in the water - and even then you must aerate the water to remove all of it) - but I never see people suggest it for that reason.

So this is directed to the people that advise letting the water set out - why do you suggest it?

Thanks, all! Hope you're having a great afternoon!

I have a new fish tank - I have had it nearly 1 month now. I started with 6 fish and I am now down to 3! They are all getting ill and dying on me! I have discovered it is because my nitrite levels are too high. I have bought a nitrazorb pouch and that has helped a little but nowhere near enough and I am doing daily water changes but none of this seem to be helping. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, Is there anything else that could be making my fish ill? My ammonia and Nitrate levels are low so thats not the problem....

Hi,
I have a Bushy nose algea eater in a 10 gallon tank. He keeps poluting the tank so much that I cannot get the Nitrite level lower than 0.50...no matter what I've tried. I changed the water everyday for a week, 30 to 50% water change. I added good bacteria, I bought another product that helped my situation to not deteriorate but didn't help make it better. I cleaned the gravel. I'm at a lost. I have 15 baby guppies in another aquarium that I will need to seperate in 2 months. I have to get that tank under control. Everything else seems to be normal. Amonia is slightly high but, not much. Nitrite will get much higher than 0.50 if I don't do a 30% water change every day. I'm starting to wonder if this fish is too big for my 10g tank. Any advice would be great. thanks !

Last night some friends and I were drinking and watching Jack A** the movie. Well, I swallowed a few live gold fish after drinking some beers and I think the fish are drunk in my stomach. They keep bumping into the sides of me and it is making me feel wierd. I could not sleep due to their movements. I have thought about trying to throw up and cannot bring myself to do it. How long will they keep this up?

Before getting goldfish, I looked up a lot about them. The #1 thing i looked up was medical problems. Ick, Bloat, all that stuff. They said bloat is when a fish is floating on the surface, still alive. Feed them Mushed peas until they can sink back down. This morning and last night, My fish has been laying on his side breathing when he is near the surface, but can swim normally when he is near the middle of the bowl. I am going to get some peas today to try it, but my fish lives with another gold fish and i want to know if it is contagious. If it's not bloat please tell me what it is!! And what i can do!!!

Thank you so much!

hi! I just got a new fish tank and I was planning on buying 2 yellow african cichlids! I have never had this type of fish so I was wondering if anybody has ANY helpful information or ideas for me! I really like pufferfish and was wondering if you can have them in the same tank as the cichlids or will they eat eachother and fight too much? If not what other types of fish make good tankmates for yellow african cichlids? If I have 2 yellow african cichlids they wont eat eachother will they? My tank is a 20 or 30 gallon if that makes a difference! Thanks so much for your help!!!
