I manage a restaurant and we have a lobster tank. We are often asked how long they live for hence the question.

Also...here's some grammar advice. Don't end a sentence in a preposition! You should have asked, "How long do lobsters live?" The FOR at the end is redundant and grammatically incorrect. Sorry...pet peeve of mine.

Right up until they are plunged into a boiling tanke of water. They live for ages if left alone and have lots of food
