Did you condition the water? Room temp water? did you test the various toxin levels IE ammonia, nitrite n nitrates, pH etc? water changes can be very stressful for fish. the hot water was probably why they hung at bottom ...maybe the water was cooler there.

Anything that's wrong with the aquarium...they will tell you. Could you give the tank stats tho....size, population etc. Also, are you a new aquariist?...because there are some really good site that help with this new endeavor...i know was a recent newbie....have they calmed down yet? try turning their lights off so they have darkness and feel safe.

Good resource to have is this site:

It sounds like something was wrong with the water change. Was the water really cold or too warm? Did you remember to add something to eliminate chlorine and other chemicals in the water? If not, do so immediately. In the future, make sure the water change is no more than one third of the water and try to use water that is atleast room temperature or as close to the temperature of the existing water as possible.

I guess you've answer your own question, but what you describe would probably be the behaviour when the fishes suffer shock.

It could be due to temperature or even pH (large differences).

If the water has toxin the fish might also behave likewise and some will go on the water surface to gulp for air, because the most sensitive part which toxin usually effect first will be the gills, preventing them from breathing right.

Was the temperature of the water you were putting in the same or within a couple degrees of what you already had in the tank? If the temperature difference is more than a few degrees it can cause the fish undo stress that could lead to them dying.

you should only have a difference of a degree of their current water temp. if no thermometer use your inside of your wrist and try to get the same feeling in both temps. Make sure you add a GOOD water conditioner to remove bad chemicals. if your pH or chlorine is wrong they will react like that. be very careful, once they are dead they are dead so better to take extra time. I bought a couple of really good and CHEAP temperature gauges on eBay. It will be a very good investment. cheaper than continually buying new fish. I had Orandas (50.00 buck a pop) but totally awsome) and one became a pet and layed in my hand when i put my hand in there. I lost him from not being careful.
good luck

ALSO IF YOUR FISH HAS A LOT OF DIFFERENCE OF TEMP'S THEY CAN GET ICK. AND THAT IS NASTY

I'd say you answered you're own question :) Probably the temperature difference stressed/shocked them. Really need to make sure it's very similar to the same temp as the tank water. Also, did you dechlorinate the water before adding it? If it was that quick though, I'd say it was the temp. Hope they do well, good luck!

It appears that there is chlorine poisoning. U should have used chlorine remover immediately.
Never siphon more than one sixth of the water.
If u do then use de chlorinator or use warer stored for over 48 hrs.
