Fish - September 2006

My dog destroyed my appartment, so I had to leave her at my mothers house. I would still like a pet, so I've decided to get a saltwater fish tank. I went to a pet shop yesterday and they weren''t too helpful. I'm turning to the world for some helpful advice. How much should I put aside to get started? I think a 30 to 40 Gallon tank is a good size. I guess what I really want is to build a nice ecosystem for about 5 to 6 fish, some anemonies, and a coral shrimp or two. Is 30 to 40 too much?

We have a 30-gallon tank with freshwater tropical fish such as guramis, tetras, a plecostomus and glassfish. They are all pretty established and I am thinking of emptying the tank half way, getting oxygen tablets (if there is such a thing) and wrapping the tank in saran wrap and poking holes in it so the fish can live but the water won't slosh about. My concern is the length of the trip and the water temperature. It is nearly 1,700 miles we are driving. Has anyone else done anything similar? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your help!

My goldfish has had fin rot and I tried treating him twice with Maracyn, but it just kept coming back and getting worse. I've decided to up it a level and try Maracyn-Two. Has anyone had any experience with this medication? What can I expect? How were your results? Thanks!

Why does our Beta build a bubble nest at the surface of the water when it lives alone in its tank? I don't even know if this is a male or a female? How do you tell them apart? Is it a sign that it needs a mate?

I have 3 tanks, 2 10 gallon and 1 5 gallon tank without a lid on it. (the other 2 have UV/Florescent lighting). I am going to get guppyes, so how many should I get? I don't want them to over breed, so I was thinking maybe I should get 3 males and 1 female? (the males are more colorful and females are kind of dull). I do want fry but not a lot. So should I get a tank separator and get 3 male and 1 or 2 female and split them up in the same tank but with a separator? So that the other tank can be for the fry? (Im not planning on using my 5 gallon tank because it doesnt have a lid and it takes up too much space).
Also is it a good idea to separate the fish into male and female but yet keep them in the same tank with a dividor? Also what will happen if I get 3 male and 1 female?
