The fish in my salt water tank can, but only some of the fish in my freshwater tank can (or maybe the ones who are not shy will simply beg off of anyone).

Some can (especially some of the 'intelligent' fish).

I'm the only one who feeds my fish and they'll swim and hide if anyone but me approaches the tank; and when I do they get excited (for food).

The fact that they did this after I had been gone for several days proves they're capable of memory greater than a few seconds.

Mine recognizes me. I have a Tiger Oscar and 3 Gold fish. They know who feeds them so when I approach the tanks they swim up, if I sitting by the aquarium-either one-they will swim to that side and just stair at me. If I put my finger on the glass they will come up to it and swim around and then move when I take it back.

When other people approach the tanks, they wont approach them, they will stay at the back corner of either tank. So I know mine know who I am.

It seems from my experience that mostly the predacious fish do. My friend has an oscar that will only come up to him for food. we also have a pond with several bluegills in it and they will come up to either of us (we both feed them). it seems like other smaller fish just recognize anybody as a food source.

I think fish recognize food, other fish & natural aquatic preditors. If they were smart enough to recognize anything else, we would have fish races, fish shows & seeing eye fish [for the visually impaired swimmers].

yes they can, also that 8 second memory is a load of bull ****, the mythbusters trained a fish over a period of 3 months to go through a maze. so they have a longer memory and do reconize people.

No... Fish probably can't know each other either. However...my goldfish always go to the corner and squrm around when I walk by,but that just means their hungry and they want me to feed them.
