My goldfish has had fin rot and I tried treating him twice with Maracyn, but it just kept coming back and getting worse. I've decided to up it a level and try Maracyn-Two. Has anyone had any experience with this medication? What can I expect? How were your results? Thanks!

Have you tried using slat for freshwater aquariums. It doesn't kill the cycle of your tank which stops the stress of water spikes after most treatment (which leaves your fish open for more infections). Add one tablespoon for every 5 gallons of water. It stops the infection, speeds healing, and causes the fish to produce more slime protecting them form further problems. Do a 50% water change and add it to your tank. You don't have to remove parts of the filter or anything and it can be used permanently (added to the new water of every water change).

When treating fresh water fish, your best bet is Maracyn Two or Maracyn TC. Maracyn Two is minocycline, TC is tetracycline. Most bacterial infections fresh water fish get is caused by gram negative bacterias, and therefore should use a antibitoic that treats gram negative infections. Maracyn is erythromycin, which is more geared toward treating gram positive infections. Maracyn Plus contains 2 antibiotics, sulfadimidine and trimethoprim. I haven't done enough research on it so that's why I don't recommend it much and I haven't seen it as available as the others, but I have seen mentioned it'll take care of some gram negative infections. For dropsy....dropsy can have several different causes. Usually, poor water quality is the culprit. Internal bacteria or parasites can also cause it. So for treatment, I think you'd be best making sure the water quality is good, and feeding a medicated antibacterial food-which gets the meds inside the fish where it's needed. Or make your own with Maracyn Two or tetracycline tabs by soaking some food in a bowl with tank water and some of the antibiotic. Do not use salt in the tank. If anything, use some epsom salt as a bath, and soak the fish for about 20-30 minutes. Epsom salt helps to draw fluids out, which is what happens with dropsy-the fish's kidneys are shutting down and it starts retaining fluids. If the fish is starting to pinecone(scales sticking out), then it's been my experience the fish will die within a few days. Good luck!
