I just asked a question a little while ago stating that my dog thinks he is Alpha and he is wayyyyy out of control.
Someone mentioned something called a prong collar. I looked it up and they seem pretty harsh! I'm sure they are not as bad as they look, so we are thinking about getting one & trying it. [Desperate times call for desperate measures]
Can someone tell me all about them? & How to put them on? I'm not even sure what size I need. My Malamute has more fur on hiss neck area then anywhere else on his body! Do i need a bigger size because of this?

everytime she goes on the carpet we rub her nose in it and put her out for a while or we just have her sit there and watch while we clean it up....but sometimes she will just go back to the same spot and do it again or she bite us....i dont know wat to do with her....

I have amale pitbull who is 9 months old. He is like one of my kids and he is the sweetest guy. He is very gentle with kids and other pets but latley if i am in the room and someone comes in my house he will growl and bare his teeth. I tried to just tell him no but he will growl until they leave the room or i do and he stays right in front of me. He also does this with my son who is 15 months old but he wont do it with my daughters or my husband. He also does it when i am walking him on the leash and people approach me or my son but again if my husband walks him he will not do it. I wanted to know if anyone knew why he has started this behavior and how i can correct it. I love pitbulls and i want him to be well behaved so he can show people that they really are a good breed with a bad rap but this behavior is not acceptable and i do not know what to do.

In the past 2 weeks my dog (5mo. Weimaraner/Rott mix) has developed 4 lumps around her left shoulder. 3 of them are almost golfball sized and the other one, I just discovered last night, was smaller but could get bigger like the others. Any ideas on what it could be?

I know nothing about dogs, except that I want one. Here is my situation. I live in a 2 BR condo with a roomate. We both work 7-4pm jobs M-F. I want a dog that can be alone in the house for that extended period of time. I'd like it to be small - medium size, that doesn’t shed too much and is friendly to all and not too loud. Can someone please make some recommendations! All help is appreciated!

my dog has been licking his nose a lot and its nose been running, he is wheezey lying down and panting a lot when walking, he is about 8 years old but in otherwise perfect health, can dogs get colds or is this something more serious?? (he has been vaccinated against kennel cough)
should i take him to the vet soon as i can? could this possibly be an effect of our wood burning stove as we only got it this winter? could he be asthmatic??

Buster is an Eskimo Spitz. He is about 7. I got him when he was a puppy. He is limping on one of his back legs. I don't know if it is in his hip or leg. He has not been hit by a car because he can't get in the road. I examined his foot and didn't see any cut places & nothing in the foot as a brier. And I didn't see any broken toes. What could it be?

My dog was pregnant, she was getting pretty big, I got everything together for her, took her to the vet and confirmed her pregnancy, but this week all of a sudden she's so much thinner, she doesn't look pregnant at all. I can't find any evidence of a miscarriage, other than she was cleaning herself quite a bit the other day, that's it that's all I saw...did she eat them?

Merrick canned food?

I like to mix some wet food with the dry kibble (Canidae) and I found some great varieties at the store this weekend. The ingredients are fabulous and he just went nuts this morning.

Anyone else feed their dog Merrick Canned food as a supplement and what are your experiences?

Our dog just got back from visiting a house with some other dogs. We noticed him scratching and biting more than usual so we checked for little black dots. We found some, put them on a tissue, wet them and they bled out red. Which our vet says can be a sure sign of fleas.

I know this is quite a common occurance but what about flea ettiquette?? We have an appointment at the groomer later this week and I dont want to bring him if he has fleas and risk the chance of giving them to other dogs. Hes also still enrolled in puppy school, should we not take him to a place with other dogs until we know he's flea free?

This is our first dog and I feel kind of neurotic about this, but I just dont want him to give them to another animal!

What do you do when your dog has fleas and what are the best way get rid of them AND keep them from returning, we're on the way to the pet store soon to get some things for him (and our house). What are some good products you can reccommend?

Dear Dogs,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by Schumacher and is not a racetrack Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, growl, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it 'fur'niture.)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: In many ways, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3. Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6.Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fas hions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a 'gazillion' dollars for college.
And finally,
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

She is hyper all day, running after the cat, jumping on everyone she meets in her way, jumping on her coaches and playing with her toys for hours. I walk her a full hour everyday and I play fetch with her for 30 minutes in the evening and still she is so hyper that she keeps running, out of breath, drinking every 5 minutes and if I am talking to someone she becomes jealous and she becomes aggressive and will try to bite and bark until I give her attention. I know that most of you will say that she needs obedience training, which I might end up giving her, but at the moment, I WANT TO KNOW IF ALL THIS HYPER BEHAVIOR CAN AND WILL AFFECT HER HEART IN A NEGATIVE WAY??? Can she have a heart problem if she keeps going like this?

He's 15 and I've never loved a dog more. He's really smart and loves our family a lot. He's been there to cheer me up when NO ONE was around. But...
He hasn't been diagnosed with anything severe. My family and I have just heard some speculations about his unusually shaky legs. It's hard for him to stand for more than 7 min at a time. He's had some trouble controlling his "business". Twice, we've been so worried about the use of his hind legs we've taken him to doggy emergency. The weakness in his legs seems to get worse with the cold. Now, the worst part...He doesn't see or hear well at all anymore. He doesn't recognize us unless he gets close enough to smell us first. I'm worried. But I love him so much, I don't know what to do.

I am worried of having an out of control dog. Lately when I take her outside, she refuses to go back into the house. If I tug on her leash, she lays down on the ground and won't budge. She is treated very well and has plenty of play time outside. This is a new behavior. My boyfriend never has this problem with her. As soon as he comes out there, she runs into the house. I don't yell at her or hurt her. I have tried treats also, but she gets to a certain part on the sidewalk and won't go any further. What is going on with her? Is she testing me? How do I get her to look at me as a dominent also? Also, I have a nine-month old...should I consider this agressive behavior?
