Our dog just got back from visiting a house with some other dogs. We noticed him scratching and biting more than usual so we checked for little black dots. We found some, put them on a tissue, wet them and they bled out red. Which our vet says can be a sure sign of fleas.

I know this is quite a common occurance but what about flea ettiquette?? We have an appointment at the groomer later this week and I dont want to bring him if he has fleas and risk the chance of giving them to other dogs. Hes also still enrolled in puppy school, should we not take him to a place with other dogs until we know he's flea free?

This is our first dog and I feel kind of neurotic about this, but I just dont want him to give them to another animal!

What do you do when your dog has fleas and what are the best way get rid of them AND keep them from returning, we're on the way to the pet store soon to get some things for him (and our house). What are some good products you can reccommend?

No, don't buy any flea treatments from a pet store, for your dog or your house. You really would be wasting your time - stores aren't licensed to sell the chemicals that are effective against fleas.

It's easy and quick to get rid of these fleas, then you can take your dog wherever you like. Just get a proper treatment from a vet, like Frontline or Revolution or Advantage. These will get rid of all his fleas within 24 hours. Just don't bath before or after applying the stuff - wait 48 hours before and after applying before bathing, or sending him to the groomers to be bathed, or the stuff won't work properly.

Fleas are a pesky problem all right! They are hard to get rid of too. The vet told me to use Frontline or K9 Advantix. After putting it on it will kill the fleas within a few hours. The problem is that the fleas more than likely have layed tons of eggs. So, when the eggs hatch the medicine will kill them. I would use the flea medicine for a few months to be certain they are gone. Also, a soap based cleaner can kill fleas when you give them a bath. If you are going to do that be sure to use K9 Advantix. Frontline will stop working if you use anything soap based.

A method that I use will get rid of the fleas in 24 hours.

1) Bathe with a mild oatmeal soap and put eucalyptus oil in the bath water.

2) Use flea drops. The best two I've found are Revolution (also has a heartworm preventative) and natures guardian.

3) Sprinkle borax laundry detergent on your carpet and rub in with a broom. Leave for 24 hours and vaccume up.

4) Spray furniture with a basic flea spray.

5) Treat the yard with a inspect treatment that gets rid of fleas and ticks such as sevin dust.

Give the dog a bath and fast! That way you don't get fleas in your house, and this can be very hard to control. This should do the trick, if not get him some frontline or advantage flee medication. It lasts for a month and works wonderfully.

Get Frontline Plus or Advantage and use it monthly. All of the cheaper products are are garbage - don't work well and are more toxic. So forget flea collars, sprays, dips, shampoos and such. And garlic and other home remedies don't work. Don't use flea bombs either.

Clean your house well, vacuum and wash dog bedding. That combined with Frontline or Advantage will do it.

Get advantage of frontline. Not only will they kill the ones he has in less than 48 hours, but protection from one dose lasts a month. I think it comes in 3 dose packages and normally costs about 35 dollars at my vet's office. But it's worth every cent.
