I thought you were looking for a female to breed to your boxer mix.

Any dog needs proper socialization and training ....It depends on your lifestyle...some need more grooming than others, etc...

Top answer for me would be a bullmastiff. They are gentle giants of the dog world. I own three and have never had a problem with any type aggression from my male or otherwise. Honestly I would go for the female variety any day of the week as they are more maternal and user friendly so to speak. My female is the most well rounded dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and owning. I don't worry about my small kids playing with her as she is gentle. One cannot beat a well bred bullmastiff.

I would stay away from sheppards of any kind and would be leary of the lab type dogs. They are ultra hyper and that itself can be a turn off for people scared of dogs. Sheppards have always been bad luck for my family. My sister ended up with half her face removed by one and any other bite incident I have dealt with has been sheppard mix or full sheppard. Labs and retreivers are prone to neurotic episodes if not trained and exercised properly.

Great danes and St Bernards are good dogs as well but the danes are big and the bernards slobber like you wouldn't believe as do the bullies but not to the same extent.

Labrador Retrievers are the most popular family dog. However, I own a Mastiff and he is absolutely FANTASTIC with my little ones. Since your sister is afraid of big dogs, then a gentle, silly, and fun loving Lab is probably the way to go. The Giant Breeds aren't for the squeamish! Even though they are gentle, they are HUGE! My Mastiff is 9 months old and already weighs in at 130, whereas a full grown Lab will probably weigh 60-90 pounds.

If you have the time to train a dog believe it or not you can have your pick. A lot of dogs have a bad rep but it all depends on how much time you have and the training and structure that you can give them. I train dogs and worked a few vets. You would not believe me if I told you but rots, are great dogs and they are great family dogs but YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE TIME FOR THEM I can not stress that enough. If you want a low mantinas dog that is great with little kid and older kids a lab, cocker spaniels, Britney spaniels, if you have the room great Dans but with the dam they are lab dogs and love to be cuddled so make room for 3 in your bed if you get one of them, also the dalmatian as well as golden retriever. Do not over look the mix breed I have a Lab mix that we got from the local animal shelter and she is one of the best dogs easy to train smart and caring with young kids and protective. Remember what ever you chose and if it is your first dog you can go on line to www.pets.org and look up your breed and they offer pet training class as a pet smart or look in your local paper or pet store. Also when you have a dog from a puppy you may have a stronger bound with it as it grows but don't let that shy you away from getting an older dog from a shelter most of them are great dogs that people did not have time for and are looking for a good home. It is all up to you and how much time you have to train your dog. Good luck I hope this helped.

Find out why she's scared - has she been bitten or attacked by a large breed before, or even pushed about by a playful one? To small girls, big dogs look awfully big - I remember being bowled over by an over-friendly Lab when I was 8 or 9.

Perhaps a neighbour or friend has a larger dog they'd be willing to allow her to pet and feed a little. You won't cure her fear simply by bringing a big dog into your home and forcing her to live with it; more likely, that's going to make her resent your new pet. Allow her to gradually become accustomed to handling dogs, and she'll hopefully realise there's nothing to fear, that well-trained gentle giants are big babies. Make sure you train your dog thoroughly, to prevent it from getting into bad habits potentially upsetting to less confident owners like jumping up or pulling on the leash.

Great Danes are the gentles giants for a family!
of a Irish Wolf Hound they are way bigger than great danes!
or go a shelter and pick out a mastiff mix they are common dogs at shelters!
Good luck!

collies, I have a miniature one, maybe that will be good for your sister, I've had collies in my household all my life, they're super easy to train, loyal to their family, very protective and they make great farm dogs.
I'd call them one of the smartest dogs.
They're also great with kids! There as been one in my house since the day I was born.

Also great danes (sp?!). As big as they are, they're very gentle calm, and great with kids, they make look intimidating, but they're amazing animals. They're great to keep as protective dogs aswell.

Great Danes, St.Bernards, Alaskin Malibutes, Siberian Huskys (supprislying), and many others, if you have small children I would recommend any of those because if you choose the right dog you will have a great time with it.

i agree with the first answerer. great danes and mastiffs. they're huge, but they're sooooo lazy. the worst you have to worry about is the landmines they leave behind and drooling. also the occasional wagging tail. try getting a dog as a puppy. she'll fall in love with the pup and watch it grow up so it won't be nearly as scary.
