There are just some people who see dogs as pests.

I hate them. :(

That's a seriously messed up law!!

Those dogs had a life.
Those chickens probably just layed eggs.

All life deserves respect. The people at fault here are the ones that owned Huskies and did not have a properly secured yard. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they may have thought their dogs were secured. What the news report did not reveal was whether these dogs routinely got out and menaced livestock, or if this was a first time ordeal.

The collective loss was the death of the chickens and the death of the dogs. I wish people were more neighborly and could have worked this out without killing the dogs, but the unfortunate truth is, what he did is not illegal. What if that man had a pair of small dogs that those dogs attacked?

Those dogs were killing his chickens. They first had to tear his coop open to get to them. I am sure the man was frantic and people who live in the country, if they have livestock, come running and armed if they hear the animals distressed.
It's their job to guard the coop. He could have had a dog guarding the coop and that dog could have been killed by the huskies. Fault? OWNERS.

Chickens can make excellent pets, just because YOU don't see them as a pet doesn't mean that they aren't part of some other person's family. At the vet where I work we have one diabetic client who keeps a chicken as a pet. The chicken will actually alert him when his blood sugar is too low, just like a DOG would.

And if they weren't pets, that's even more legal reason for the man to shoot the dogs because that means the chickens are probably part of his livelihood. No, I don't think the man should go to jail. I think the dogs' owners should have kept them under control. The number one rule for huskies is to NEVER let them run off leash because if you do they will probably get themselves into dangerous trouble.

Yes, he should go to jail, but he won't. Unfortunately, there are people who think that shooting is the only way to solve a problem or take charge of a situation. Next time, it could be 2 kids he recklessly discharges his gun at.

I'm sure the dogs' owner would have replaced the chickens if they'd been given the chance. This bozo sounds like a real, selfrighteous menace.

He was protecting his chickens from two dogs that trespassed onto his property, entered his chicken coop and killed some of the chickens. Maybe the owners of the dogs will be more responsible next time and not let their pets run loose and possibly endanger livestock and people.

It doesn't matter whether you see chickens as pets. In the eyes of the law, all owned animals are property. Property can't feel or think, therefore, it must be controlled by you at all times.
That man had every right to protect his animals/property, by all means allowed in that state.

In most states a dog harrasing livestock can be leagally shot. In fact in my area animal control will tell you to shoot them. I doubt that law will change (or if it does that it'll change behavior). Its the farmer's moral obligation to protect his stock (not to mention the loss of his living). This is simlar to shooting someone raping your wife - defense
Sorry, its the owner of the dogs who let them run loose should be up on charges- the dogs death is HIS fault.

I agree with Jo. Chickens are as precious to some people are as dogs to other people.
