why do people always insist on buying a pure-bred dog from a breeder? I mean, mixed breeds are so much healthier, and there are tons of dogs in pounds who need a home! not to mention its so much cheaper to adopt a dog than to go out and buy a 'designer doggy' from a breeder. i adopted my dog. why don't other people do the same?

I have one dog book that teaches the alpha dog theory and another that says the Alpha Dog thing is outdated and only positive training like clicker training should be used

so which is right? or are they both right?

Okay so here is what I'm looking for.. Big, good sense of protection, and cannot shed.. I'm 15 and female and am looking for a dog that can be trained as a guard dog.. NOT AN ATTACK DOG.. just one that simply barks or growls at anything suspicious like a stranger.. I love rotties but sadly my mom said no.. same with pits.. Although I do like Staffordshires (yes i know they branched off pits but my mom doesnt) and American Bulldogs and Boxers.. Okay so any help.. And I DO NOT WANT A LAB.. I know they are a great breed and popular but they shed way way way to much for me to keep up with.

I have a 5 month old St. Bernard who is just skin and bones because he's growing so fast. We feed him top of the line Large breed puppy food but its obviously not giving him the nutrition he needs. My puppy and my neighbors dog were playing on my lawn. My neighbor told me to get the puppy off her dog because she said she wanted her dog to be the dominant one.

I made the mistake of not taking my 85lb lab to a patch of grass after he'd been at the groomer for a few hours, and during the 15 minute car trip home, he peed. A lot. For like 35 seconds or more. All over the back seat of my lease car.
I raced right home and tried to blot the excess up with paper towels, and then treated the area twice with a generous amount of Petzyme, and left the car doors open for 12 hours to air out, but it clearly didn't work. The smell is almost staggering when you open the car door. Is detailing the car my only option? Please help!

My shepherd mix is about 10 years old and is restricted to a gentle leader outdoors. It has been very very hot, and whether it is the heat, her noise phobia (thunder, guns, planes, etc) or something else is bothering her, she doesn't want to take a long walk. She has to be leashed because she has a streak of fear aggression and cannot be relied upon not to run off helter skelter after a squirrel, motor cycle, etc. even though she knows to come when called... and does except when carried away on more important matters... I know that this is my fault, though I will say that she has been difficult to train. She needs a fenced in yard with supervision. I just wondered if there was any special signifigance to the digging in the dirt (she loves to do this for fun and when she is mad) and lying in it. She also loves to just lie down in a grassy place and become immovable/roll and roll. One of her nicknames is Cinnamon Roll. She is definitely slowing down. Please be constructive.

(I didn't give it to him, he opened the cupboard, lol), and he was absolutely fine! I was freaked out thinking we would be at the vets that night, but it didn't even affect him. Is this normal?

I just got my rescued bichon frise puppy. He is really really skinny and kind of shy. Is there any kind of special food or extra treats I can give him to help him gain some weight.

Also, What is best for energy. He almost doesn't have the energy to keep his head up after 5 minutes. He was just neutered so does that have something to do with it?

Please Help me out

My love for animals is maibe going a bit to the extreme...
Me and Almi, my bichon, understand each other perfectly. I tried to train her to sit! I was succesfull, but I stoped because I think is cruel to make animals play like puppets. Almi understands all I say to her....really....sometimes I think if she is realy "a dog" !!
So , a dog should get our love and attention, not our commands!!!!

i have a golden pup of 3 months. he sleeps outside in our pergola area. When it gets dark at night, does it matter to dogs if we leave a light on?

took her in and we got her to a healthy wait and has gotten all of her shots. Unfortunately they couldnt tell us what age she was. She now is pregnant and we dont know her past and she has been pregnant for 6 weeks. He nipples are filled with milk and you can feel the puppies move and she breathes really heavily for the past couple of weeks. She is ready to burst. Seriously i dont think she can hold anymore and she cant even jump up on the couch anymore either. Can you tell me when she should be having the puppies and what are signs we should look out for when she goes into labor?
