No, but they are in the same "family" and many people consider them the same and by apperances cannot tell a difference.

Both are great dogs though.

That is a point of contention is between Kennel Clubs. The AKC only recognizes the American Staffordshire Terrier and the UKC only recognizes the American Pit Bull Terrier. Actually, dogs can be registered under both names in both clubs. A dog first has to be registered as an American Staffordshire Terrier in the AKC, then it can be registered as an American Pit Bull Terrier in the UKC - not the other way around (AKC won't allow a dog registered as an American Pitbull Terrier to register as an American Staffordshire Terrier).

The argument for the dogs being different breeds is that they are from separate bloodlines. However, appearance-wise they resemble each other.

Like everyone else said, a pit bull is just a generic term - like hound, shepherd, etc. to describe a type of dog. Both breeds are collectively lumped as "pit bulls," which describes a type of dog that is medium sized, short haired, muscular/stocky, etc. and originally bred to fight in a pit.

See the link below - it has a lot of details on this topic.

I would say they are the pretty much the same breed. Remember Petey of Little Rascals and Buster Brown fame? He was registered with the AKC as an American Staffordshire Terrier and With the UKC as an American Pit Bull Terrier.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a different Breed.

Elayne Trakand is right!!
They are the same breed!
Louis P. Colby which is in fact the first person to register his dogs under the breed name American Pitbull Terrier with the ADBA and there is also proof of the AKC registering his dogs under the name of American Staffordshire Terriers.
The AKC in full knowledge registered the same breed under another name in hopes of not upsetting it's members or the general public and policiticans by using the name "Pitbull" which meant bred for the fighting pit.

no they are cousins but a completely separate breed. unfortuantely legally a lot of the time they are lumped together as a "dangerous" breed. in most rules they say a pit or anything that looks like pit which is about 25 other breeds all lumped in there the zstaffie being one of them

the saying of "pit bull" sums up the bullie breeds in one term, it is not by itself a breed, but a category of the breeds as a whole... AMST falls into the "pit bull" category

Let me check the pedigrees of some of the dogs I've owned ... let's see, ... yep, they are the same breed. What's this "checking for legal purposes stuff?"
