Cats - November 2006

Since the summer, I've made several attemps at keeping kittens (either abandon ones my family and I have found or kittens my cousin is trying to get rid of). I've had six kittens (usually in pairs). One got ran over. The rest just...disappeared...I am not sure if something is eating them or my other cat is trying to chase them off. My cat (female) is pretty old and never took well too any kittens but mostly just ignored them with the occasional hissing. I am just unsure of what's going on and what I can do. My dad's allergic so I can't keep them inside. I really want a young kitten because my present cat (who's more of my sister's cat) is extremely fussy (when she's around). Any advice as to what to do or what's going on?

What's more annoying (but equally adorable)- your cat chasing the broom when you sweep or trying to sit in your lap in the bathroom? Any more?

Please help me! My 8 month old tabby (male) is bloated, strains to breathe and now won't eat. He went through this last week and then went into kidney failure. But he bounced back after 3 days of IV fluids. Now he's sick again, but kidneys are okay.

My husband wants to end his suffering, but I want to give him a chance. He's the sweetest cast ever!

Doctors have run tons of tests, done x-rays and nothing seems out of the ordinary. They've put him on diuretics and antibiotics, but he's only a little better. He's suffering, but I don't want to put him down if there's hope!

He's been tested (about a month ago) for FIP, leukemia and AIDS. All negative. Even tested again for FIP last week. Also negative. Should we put him down or is there hope?

I wanna impress my girlfriend (well shes not YET but she will be, I kinda flirt with her by email) and shes all into my cat and told me i should dye it pink. His name is Bonzi (like the monkey) is it dangerous to play god with this feline? I wanna impress her enough so that she sees me.

Is it o.k to leave a cat alone for 5 days by herself. She doesn't get along with people and likes to be by herself anyway so it's not like she'll miss the attention. Of course I will leave her TONS of food and water. I will have someone come the 3rd day we're gone to check up on her but that's it.

My neighbor gave me a couple of purses yesterday which must of had fleas from his dirty *** cat b/c a couple hours later i was finding fleas on my cat which is an indoor cat. I gave her a bath but the cat shampoo i had i dont think it was for fleas so we had to pick them off of her. What i need to know is What are good products to get all the fleas off my cat and out of my house?

My cat is an indoor/outdoor cat. Recently he started favoring his right paw. We looked at it and it looks like it has a thorn in it. I noticed he will run on it, but not walk on it. When he's inside he looks like he's trying to work it out. Should I take him to the vet or just let him work it out himself? I don't want him to be in pain, but he doesn't like the vet. He's still eating just fine and acting fine.

Lately my cat has been acting very strange, especially w/ her eating habits. She is old and this may be a part of why she is acting like this, but: everytime I walk into the kitchen she meows like she is starving even though she gets fed THREE TIMES A DAY! And enough food too... she will, each time I feed her, gobble it up in a flsh second and then later VOMIT. This is NOT a joke even though it sounds like I am describing a bulimic human.
Is she sick? Is it just because she's getting old that she has an increasing appetite and can't keep it down because she eats it took fast?
What do you think is wrong with her?

I noticed the blisters when I was checking his toe nails.
Why didn't he cry or limp when he first did it? Cat's paws have to be sensitive?
He's healing up very well no infection and doesn't flinch when I put the ointment on them.

My partner and I are separating after 6 years, and we have two young cats, each of them "owns" one of us, as cats do. I don't want to even think of leaving "my" cat behind, but is it fair to separate them? They spend more time together than they do with us, and they'd suddenly be alone much of the day in their new homes. Some friends tell me to put them on separation-anxiety-medication, but that sounds extreme. I guess this is a question for people with lots of cat experience, or vets.

If a person were to adopt a kitten are there any specific breeds that tend to become good natured and gentle adult cats? I read somewhere that grey and black tabby cats generally have a nice, affectionate temperment. I don't know if this is true but I have had 2 tabbys and they were both really sweet little lap cats. I know I could adopt an adult cat that has already developed a personality but because I've recently put my cat down after 19 years I do think I would like a very young cat or kitten so I don't have to go through another difficult loss for a long time. I've never adopted a cat before because my first 2 showed up at my door and adopted me!

Oscar is about 10 weeks old. He eats from a bowl without a problem, but when it comes to drinking water from a bowl, he would rather tip the bowl over and drink the water off the floor. Or, drink water from the shower after I get out. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to convince him to drink from a bowl? I'm worried he'll dehydrate when he spills his water and it dries up and there's nothing in the shower.

Anyone know about anyone giving away kittens in the OKC area? I'm still checking the shelters and petfinder. I just want to know if there are any around so I can check for them too.

My house is already set up with brand new stuff and my vet is already waiting for me to let him know when I get it so we can schedule a visit.

I'm in NW OKC. Norman and Guthrie are too far for now and the pet stores are ridiculously overpriced..

This question is for a vet or someone who has had a cat with a broken leg...How much does the vet cost to get the leg fixed? I am taking her tomorrow(it just happened today) and i wanted to know about how much money i will be spending. I'm pretty sure it's broken or it might just be sprained. Thanks in advance.

We are getting him all the help my vet can offer... He gets Metacalm drops for the pain/to stop spasms and Cystease capsules for the PH balance, as well as a special urinary diet. The tumour takes up 1/3 of his bladder and we've been told he has less than a year to live, as the tumour may have seeded elsewhere.

He seems well and happy, and we take him to the vet at the first signs of any ill health.

Am I really doing all I can, though? The vet does not want to operate, and the expense is already considerable. Any suggestions?
