Your cat is getting on a bit, and it could be for a few reasons, your cat could be forgetting where its tray is, especially if your cat has just started doing this. The cat could also be starting with not having very good control over its bowels and is having to go where they are.
Besides this you might be better off taking the cat to see the vet, just to make sure there isn't another reason why the cat has started doing this. For now, it might be worth while, putting an extra tray where it's started to go.
I've just had another thought, my older cat started to go the toilet in another room, when the tray was clean, and took him to the vet, the vet said that if the tray is in view of a window, the cat could have been frightened by something outside and is choosing to go somewhere a bit more private, and the litter could also be a bit hard for the cats paws. Try something softer so as the cat is squatting, it's not having anything too hard pressed into the pads on his paws.
I hope this helps :)

He's an old man now, and cats can get dementia as they get old, the same as us. If he is 17, that means he would be about 81ish now if he were a human. There is a syndrome called Feline Cognitive Dysfunction which is supposed to have similiar effects Alzheimer's Disease which can result in him forgetting his house training amongst other things. Take him to the vets for a check up, but mostly you will just need to be understanding, and keep cleaning up after your little old man. If you have had him for so long, you will know that cats are very clean animals and get embarrassed by things like this, poor old chap, hope he's OK

Sounds like he is suffering from old age. Could be that his bowels are packing up. Take him to the vet. Cats hate being dirty and he's probably quite ashamed of himself.

he is just getting old and forgetful. Don't get cross or smack him, as he is too old for all that nonsense and doesn't need upset as well as the axiety he probably already feels. Get him checked out at the vet,a nd think about having a tray in each room if he is in no pain.

Certainly with a cat that old there should be annual checks by a vet to assess his health. It is not because he is refusing to use the litterbox he is trying to tell you there is something physically wrong. You owe it to him to find out what is going on physically and if there is any way you can help him.
