Cats - November 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pets Cats

I have two female cats, one black and white(salem), and the other solid black (sabina). Salem is my baby, anyway I recently brought home a Male Kitten, someone had thrown out at the park, I bathed him and fed him and I even introduced him to the other cats, and at first the females were really friendly but the longer he stayed, Salem started Hissing at me and clawing at me. So I was wondering if all cats are like that? Just Naturally Jealous and Grudge holders.

And she dissappeared for over a week! I was scared to death thinking she got hit by a car or something, then she shows back up, filthy, and with something that appears to be either a very deep sucking tick or a cut under her nose. Besides giving her a bath, what else should I do? She's been spayed but I'm not sure about rabies vaccinations, she got shots during a happy kitten checkup, but not sure what...any suggestions?

His cat is 16 years old, not in good health, on medication. Does not have it in him to have her put down. very attached to it, but i'm sure will die soon. If shes stuffed, she will be around forever without the hassle.

Is their a test at the vet to tell?
We've not had her fixed because we DO want her to have babies first then we'll get her fixed. She goes outside a few hours each day for months now and still hasn't turned up pregnant.

This is an update on my kitten, Heidi, who is 8 months old and doesn't like human hands and as you know, we haven't been able to touch her after 2 1/2 months since adopting her. We are trying all your suggestions.

I'm trying a holistic remendy now and will see.

She has the most discusted look on her face when I pet and hug my other kitten, or she will look at us and just go hide. I thought if she saw that hands are for comfort and not pain she would come around.

Is she jealous? Has anyone had this problem?

Hi!I have just recently adopted a new puppy. She was at petsmart and has been home about a week now. My oldest cat (I have too) has recently started attacking the cat. Usually it is when I am sitting in my office and the puppy tries to come near me. The cat doesn't fight with the dog in the evenings when my partner and I are both home...just during lunch when I am home. She still cuddles with both of us and doesn't seem to be too depressed....why is she doing this? Will they ever get along? Any suggestions to help them be friends or at least tolerate each other?

Do cats realize we wear clothes, or do they think that we are chameleons that can change the color of our skin?

Have you heard of a cat that loves water and when muy niece gets in the shower the cat jumps in too. The cat also drinks out of the toilet, and also when you pour water in the cat bowl and the cat will put its head unter it and loves the water.

My cat doesn't like the water.

I have a 4 month old male kitten. He is an indoor cat, but I want to get him fixed. When is the right time to do this? I know they start spraying if they are not fixed--around what age do they start spraying?

I bought my cat (hes about 4 years old) some mice toys so he would stop tryin to attack my feet lol. Well he seems attached to the one yellow mouse. He has totally mangled the poor tory, No head remainds, only the body and the tail has been torn off as well. Now.. he tends to put this mouse in his food bowl and water bowl often. He use to only do it when they were empty so I figured it was his way of saying "HEY fill my food bowl!" But lately he's been doing this even when the water and food bowl are completely full. I dont really have a problem with it, but its a hassle havin to pull the soakin wet mouse out the water and get fresh water ( its pretty dirty and I dont feed my cat dirty old water) I was wonderin why he does this? Its amusing but annoyig at the same time. He only put the mangled yellow mouse in, none others. I dont want to throw his toy away either since he's so attached to it. Plus its given my feet a break from the torment.

I just got my mom a gorgeous little 8 week old (male) kitten for her birthday..we all love him, but my 3 and 9 year old (female) cats are VERY upset...The 9 year old won't get off my bed, and is actually throwing up, and sleeping alot, and the 3 year old is mad at me and the kitten, she won't let me touch or pet her anymore, and she not only hisses at the kitten, but me too now. Now i'm not completely cat stupid, I know the girls are just showing him who's in charge, but will they eventually come around?? I love them both very much but at the same time I don't want to get rid of the kitten, my mom loves him and so do I!!!

A neighbour's cat has been visiting since firework night, I haven't fed him but he comes in for sleeps and cuddles, I have spoken to his owners - long story but they don't want him and don't want me to have him, he is a lovely cat, but unfortunately has fleas, I've phoned local vets but because he is not mine they will not let me buy a flea treatment. Basically I want to know if the flea treatment you get from Tesco is effective because I have heard that it doesn't do the job, please can anybody help?

Up until recently, our 3-year old cat loved to be petted by us all the time, but now she'll cringe and slither away about half the time we try to pet her. She's still extremely friendly and well-behaved, but just less so, and I'm worried that there is something physically bothering her. Symptoms include:

- eating less
- scratching herself on occassion
- shaking herself off, as if she were a wet dog

Or could it be psychological? We took her from my sister, who rescued her from her lonely life as an office cat and kept her for 3 weeks (and we've had her for 5). The cat's strange behaviour seems to coincide with a visit from my sister.

We also let her outside on the fire escape for the first time, and she's been craving the outdoors ever since (but it's wet and dangerous up in our attic suite).

She's also in the middle of toilet training -- I've raised the litter now to almost the height of the toilet. She's had no problems adjusting though, and is still using the litter.

Any ideas?

Last week, I took my 15-year old cat to the vet as he's gotten very thin. I was afraid he had diabetes. The bill was $33.00 for the examination, $22.00 for a urinalysis w/Sedimentation and $51.50 for CBC w/profile. All together $106.50. All the tests were negative, and I was told if they tests were negative, they'd then do a thyroid test.

Today I get a bill in the mail from the vet for $50.00 for the Thyroid test; $19.50 for Urine Protein; Creatinine Ratio; and $35.00 for Culture & Sens. MGH., totalling another $104.50. All negative, which is good since the only one I understand is the thyroid one. This is a very small town, I just don't see how they can bill me so much for simple tests that basically tell me that my 15-year old cat is just old. Is this billing a bit excessive?

What does your cat do that's incredibly annoying but adorable at the same time? Mine sits right between me and the tv set so I can't see. She also chases the broom when I sweep!

(Here he is on the link above)...anyway, I feed him the same amount as my other two cats yet he is so large. Could it just be his own genetics?

If she doesn't have the food she wants she throws a tantrum. When I first got her this wasn't a problem. I have tried several different foods. If I stay firm will she give in?

My girlfriend recently moved away. We had raised a litter of kittens since they were 2 days old. When she moved i had to take her cat to my house. I had one of the other kittens from the litter at my house. They are six months old, and she is spayed. I opened my door last night and she ran out and then ran away from me and i could not find her. Normally she likes me, but since i brought her to my house all she does is hide and growl at me and my other cat. Do you guys think there is any chance she'll come back. Note that she was only here for two days, does not know where she is, and has never been outside. I have left her favorite foods outside for her to no avail, it has been a good 15 - 16 hours now.

thanks for your responses
dont be hopeful, just be honest
